Hello everybody after a couple of sleepless nights, i finally managed to understand and fix the problem and I want to share the solution, hoping to help someone. It was nothing dealing with the quality of contour lines, but just with... map IDs !!. I was splitting my contours with a lower MAPID than the one used to split the map: step 1: java -Xmx16384m -ea -jar C:\OSM\splitter\splitter.jar --mapid=13377300 --output-dir=C:\CONTOURS --max-nodes=1600000 --keep-complete=false --output=o5m "CONTOURS.PBF" step 2: java -Xmx16384m -ea -jar C:\OSM\splitter\splitter.jar --mapid=13724300 --output-dir=C:\MAPDATA --max-nodes=1600000 --keep-complete=false --output=o5m "MAPDATA.PBF" step 3: mkgmap to merge contours + mapdata I don't know why, but this cause the countour lines to be recognized as "clickable" objects by the device and the others (areas, streets, paths, POIs etc.) are not. It only happens with the Garmin unit, not on Basecamp. I changed the mapid for contours and made it HIGHER than the one for map data, and now it perfectly works !!! Contour lines are not clickable, while I can do it with all the other objects in the map and I get informations simply passing the cursor over them ! I have another question, less imoprtant: I am using a Copyright file with MKGMAP and I see that all the text is changed to UPPERCASE. Could this be changed to normal text, so that I can see exactly the text of my file ? POIs name not readable on Garmin

Hello everybody I hope you can help me with this strange behaviour I am experiencing with my maps on Garmin devices. When I move around the cursor over objects such as streets, paths, peaks and so on, they are not recognized and I can't read the name on the screen, I just read coordinates only. Also, if I press Enter, I get no information. It only works when I move the cursor over contour lines: in this case I can get elevation data for each one of them, at all the zoom levels. I tried it on different Garmin devices (gpsmap 64 and 66) with the same result. Sometimes, if I play with the zoom in and out, I can get it to work, but when I change zoom level it stops again. On Basecamp everything works perfectly, as you can see here: [cid:d0f2e346-9eea-45e5-8cb8-c58be1bfc4f9] I think this started some weeks ago when I created new contour lines with the Douglas-Peucker parameter decreased to 0.12 (before I was using higher values, such as 0.2 or 0.3). This results in much better detail, but a heavier size of the map file (42 MB before, 48 now): could this be the reason ? What else ? Thank you in advance for all your help ! Diego

Garmin eTrex10 Map - POIs

Hi, I am new to mapping and Garmin, so bear with me if I ask stupid questions! I have made a UK map from OSM data for my new eTrex10 which I am happy with - one level at resolution 18 with a pared down styling giving me a file of 1.7MB. What puzzles me is the eTrex10 has a "Where To?" page showing "Cities" and "All POIs" (among others) which have 50 entries each: "Cities" has a list of local towns and villages in distance order and all suffixed with ", ABC". "All POIs" is likewise distance sorted, an assortment of mostly small islets & islands, water features, which probably relate to my very reduced set of map features. It looks like the eTrex10 is producing these lists itself. Two questions: 1) Why do the towns have "ABC" suffixed? 2) Can I get rid of the map-derived POI list? I have tried using "--poi-excl-index=0x0100-0x0b00,0x650c,0x6603,0x1f00,0x3000-0x5f00" without success. I ask here because I suppose I won't get much help from Garmin - having replaced their built-in map! Neil.

Observations about file size

Dear all playing around with gmapsupp command line option for mkgmap i have to notice, that if i build a map with a file list according the list i have selected within mapsource, the result img file is way greater than the img file produced by mapsource. Anyone have an idea why ? Example, i selected a list of files for my europe map within mapsource it will be about 3.9 Gb. Hello Bernd In attached you can find the script I use for both Osmconvert (first) and Splitter (second), with the running log. To cut off the data I use poly files downloaded from : http://download.openstreetmap.fr/polygons/europe/italy/ They have a poly for each italian region and there is a overhang over all the edges: it's pretty large, much larger than geofabrik's. For example: [cid:5082990f-330b-4092-be73-d17917e348a6] What is very strange is that I get the empty area or artefacts right over the region bounds or just inside them, not outside where the poly file cuts it. Observations with addresses in England

Hi, Recently I offered a good collegue/friend to create a map for his Garmin GPS60 device of England. At first all seemed well, but then he complained that the village he was going to on his next vacation could not be found. The village was 'Chelsworth'. I looked into it, and managed to solve it. In the process I learned 3 things and I would like to share the info. It could very well be that I overlooked something, or be completely wrong, so please correct me where needed. 1) Building Mkgmap/Splitter yourself with Eclipse/Ant. (Windows) To be able to run the build Jar's with Java SE Runtime Environment 8 (https://www.java.com/nl/download/manual.jsp) I added release="8" to build.xml. For Mkgmap and splitter. Note: Ant requires JRE 11+, so I installed that JDK and that resulted in the runtime requirement of JRE 11 in the build Jar's, without the release="8" parameter. 2) Admin_level2 is required for setting the country, but that does not work when you build the bound files yourself from a 'small' region. I always thought it was best to create the bounds files myself using the info on: https://www.mkgmap.org.uk/news/2013/01/10/creating-pre-processed-boundaries The example shown, with 'europe.osm.pbf' does work very well indeed. It wasn't until I tried this procedure with 'england-latest.osm.pbf <http://download.geofabrik.de/europe/great-britain/england-latest.osm.pbf>' that I found that the resulting bounds files are smaller, and apparently dont contain all the info needed to set the Admin_level2 and thus Country. I tested this by adding debug lines like this in inc/address and looking at the available tags. addr:city=Ipswich { echotags "Ipswich" } addr:village=Chelsworth { echotags "Chelsworth" } (It turns out that many places (cities/villages) in England have addr:village set, although its use is discouraged. Confusing, but handy if you want to debug.) To summarize: Either take the bounds files from https://www.thkukuk.de/osm/data/bounds-latest.zip. Or if you want to create them yourself take a large area like Europe. 3) The supplied inc/address file from the default style does not handle all villages/cities well in England. Solution: If level10 is available take that value for city. According to https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:boundary%3Dadministrative Level10 for England are civil parishes Output from building the map using the debug lines in inc/address from bullet 2. (You can see that now level2 is set correctly) Some points dont have a level10: Node generated from way 376991833 [addr:city=Ipswich, addr:housenumber=9, addr:postcode=IP1 3SE, addr:street=Henley Road, amenity=pub, building=yes, mkgmap:admin_level2=GBR, mkgmap:admin_level4=England, mkgmap:admin_level6=Suffolk, mkgmap:admin_level8=Ipswich, mkgmap:area2poi=true, mkgmap:cache_area_size=35.823, mkgmap:label:1=The Greyhound, name=The Greyhound] Ipswich But if they do, that value should be taken for mkgmap:city, and not level8. Level8 (Babergh) is the district Chelsworth belongs to. Problems with contours

Hello guys I don't know if this is the right place to ask: please forgive me if not and delete my request. I have a problem with contours, generated from DEM HGT files, downloaded both from Nasa and Viewfinder, and tried with different Douglas-Peucker values. I get empty spaces in some areas of the map, close to the state/region border, and squares with no DEM data, as you can see in this picture (this is the north part of Trentino Alto Adige, north of Italy): [cid:7f488b98-a01f-4538-bd2a-fe8ca3b4d4fa] I use HGT2OSM and OSMCONVERT to process all HGTs and obtain a single OSM file, the I split it with the Splitter. Then I merge everything in a single IMG file with MKGMAP. Do you know what could be the reason of this problem and how to solve ? Thank you in advance for all your help Regards, Diego

Strange behavior of contour lines for different resolutions

Hi all, I want to generate an overlay map with contour lines. The following style works as expected: contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_minor & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x20 resolution 24] contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_medium & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x21 resolution 20] contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_major & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x22 resolution 17] Major lines are visible up from resolution 17, medium from resolution 20 and minor on highest resolution (24). If I change the style to: contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_minor & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x20 resolution 24] contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_medium & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x21 resolution 21] contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_major & (ele > 0 | ele < 0) { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x22 resolution 17] Major lines are visible up from resolution 17, but together with medium lines, minor lines are visible starting from resolution 21, too. Same effect for choosing resolution 22 or 23 for medium lines. Medium and minor lines are visible always together for medium-resolutions >= 21. As the effect is the same on QMapShack and GPSMap 66s, I assume the problem is in the map. Any ideas what can cause the problem?
