Nuvi routing performance

Playing with my shiny new Nuvi 255, I notice that it can route across an OSM map of the UK pretty well. It can find long routes reasonably quickly. In comparison, mapsource 6.13.6 often fails to determine a route at all and when it does it is rather slow about it. Do other people see good routing performance on the more recent Nuvis? Styles and Typs

At the momment mkgmap comes with two buit in styles (default and noname). I'm ignoring test which seems to be empty. Are we looking to expand the number of styles included in mkgmap itself (for example I have something that divides roads by the maxspeed tag). If not should we setup a wiki page with links to other user defined styles for people to download? Secondly would it be possible to add TYP files into the style and then get mkgmap to write the TYP file to the output folder and include it in a GMAPSUPP file (I guess mkgmap would need to correct the Family ID as part of this process). Some styles are dependent on having a paticular TYP file to work properly (eg. maxspeed style) so if the style was distributed (by whatever method) then the TYP file needs to be distributed to.

Current function of add-pois-to-areas

Hi! With recent discussions and versions I have lost track of what "add-pois-to-areas" currently does. In the last map I built with 1141 I noted that add-pois-to-areas was working a little bit to eagerly. I noted a small tree icon on many (every?) wood polygon. This of course is rather useless and clutters up the map. So my question is: Has anything been changed and how exactly does the feature work to avoid useless POI icons? thanks Nop

Proposal for a task oriented mkgmap GUI

Hi list, since trying to create my own Garmin map, I was searching for an easy to use software with a GUI for Linux. After looking at the code from mkgmap I realized, that there is already a stub for this. So I started thinking about, what the GUI should do. In my opinion it would be great to have a task oriented "One stop shop" GUI for mkgmap and splitter. Similiar to the current GUI stub in mkgmap the GUI should be based on Swing, which could be part of mkgmap (replacing the GUI stub) or own project. My personal favorite is to make it part of mkgmap, because - Update of GUI would be much easier, if part of mkgmap. - Documentation of mkgmap can be reused for GUI help, by using one source. In order to make this working, I would like to propose the following changes: 1) mkgmap and splitter documentation moved into DocBook XML format The following output formats can be created easily: - JavaHelp for GUI - Text for command line - HTML for the homepage - PDF for the printer 2) GUI is started if command line option -g or --gui or no command line option is given. - -g user-config.xml starts the GUI with a predefined configuration file. 3) Move configuration file for the mkgmap on XML basis. - Can be validated by XML schema. - Several tasks can be defined, .e.g - a task for splitting Germany and creating the map afterwards, - a task for creating the map out of rheinland-pfalz.osm.bz2 (state of Germany), because no splitting is needed, - a task for combining already created img files, - etc. - Each task can be enabled or disabled. - Can be used for batch mode processing of mkmap, - and for the GUI, which can created the configuration for the batch mode if needed. I've attached an example for the XML file and the according draft of the XML schema, which still needs to extended. If Steve and the rest agrees on my proposal, I would first continue with the XML schema and the DocBook conversion. For the GUI itself, I would like to prepare afterwards a prototype for further discussion. Please let me know what you think about the proposal. Greetings, Jörg

Tile names in IMG files

Folks: Inside official Garmin IMG files there are typically several tiles named "I<hex number>.GMP". Does anyone know how the <hex number> is derived please? I guess that it is a bit-interleave of the latitude and longitude of some reference-point in the tile, but it could be a byte-interleave, or a nybble-interleave, or the interleave is done with the number expressed in decimal or whatever. I guess mkgmap must generate tiles too, so this info is likely well-known to those involved in the code. Thanks in advance Steve BTW: I gather that is possible for subtile files to be given decimal-based filenames too. How does that work? Is there any difference in the actual files depending on the naming system used?

The blue circle

Hi, Sligthy offtopic: On my ETREX there is a blue circle drawn on the map roundabout the actual position. I always thought, that this indicates the EPE (estimation of precision). But I discovered, that the size of the circle is different in some maps. On the All-In-One Map it has a radius of 3 times of the EPE value, but on the Topo-Map from geofabrik it is much bigger... So, what is the secret with the circle? Chris

The POI index, which used to be generated by default, doesn't actually appear to be useful at this time. So now it's only generated if you give this option.
