"Turn/Exit Left" instruction given too early

I'm in the UK, so it's "Left" for me but for many of you the same problem would be with "Turn/Exit Right". Basically, I drive a few roundabouts around here where the "Exit Left" instruction is given so early that I've not actually cleared the previous exit yet! The moving-map shows what was intended, but it would have been confusing to someone relying on the spoken instructions. I was wondering: has anyone noticed if the distance between an "Exit/Turn Left" spoken instruction and the exit/turn that it refers-to is linked to the road class or road speed of the way? If so, maybe we want to examine ways to downgrade the speed that the router assumes you can drive a roundabout. I see quite a few problems around my way, mostly with motorway junction roundabouts. If it isn't the road class or road speed, could it be linked to the curvature of the road (unlikely, surely)? Steve

Administrative boundaries

It appears that very low level administrative boundaries are rendered quite prominently using the default Mkgmap style. An example is shown here: http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?pid=31404#p31404 What are the options to reduce the visibility of those boundaries?

Which Nuvi?

Hi, Thinking about purchasing a Nuvi. What models work well with mkgmap maps? Also, do any provide a track log facility so I can use the same gps to collect data? Cheers, Mark

Spotlight files makes Garmin crash

Hi, I've just discovered that a directory called .Spotlight-V100/ on the microSD card makes my Garmin Legend Cx crash when I switch it off. The crash leads to a continuous beeping sound, and the only way to stop it is to remove the batteries (and external power if connected to USB.) The .Spotlight-V100/ directory is created if you mount the micro-SD card on a Mac; apparently spotlight carries on to index the files on the card, thereby creating the directory. I have not investigated if you can turn this behaviour off. By "mounting" I mean setting the Garmin device in "USB-mode". The .Spotligt-V100 directory is _not_ created if you connect the device to the Mac and use Garmins programs (such as RoadTrip) to communicate with it. If I delete the directory in question, the very annoying crashing behaviour stops, and the Garmin switches off with the normal two-note beep. Cheers, Morten

[PATCH] stop/continue scheme extended to style-rules without conversion

Moin, I have extended the stop/continue scheme to style-rules without conversions, i.e. a style rule might now look as follows: highway=* & surface=sand {set surface=unpaved} [continue] With this extension the incomplete rules should get an own priority, so that the processing order of such rules should be defined by their order in the style file. A compiled mkgmap based on the multiple_garmin_elements-mb.patch provided by Mark Burton on 20.09.2009 can be downloaded at: http://demuur.gmxhome.de/mkgmap_no_conversion_rules.jar So please try it out, until now I have tested the modification only on a rather simple example. And please let me know, whether the attached patch is usable, since this is my first generated patch. I simply asked svn for the differences between my local copy and the head version. Gruss Torsten

Hello, Just added three different styles in my svn/resources/styles directory, then recompiled mkgmap, and now it gives me : java -jar mkgmap.jar --list-styles The following styles are available: arvernes 1.0: Style for OSM Maps contours 1.0: Style for OSM Maps default 1.0: Style for OSM Maps noname 1.0: Style for OSM Maps perso 1.0: Style for OSM Maps test 1.0: Style for OSM Maps It seems it takes the "summary" line of the first style info file and apply it for all of them. as an exemple, this is what I have in the info file of my arvernes style directory # # This file contains information about the style. # It is completely optional. # # A short one line description of the style # summary: Style for OSM Maps # Version of the style itself # version=1.0 # A longer description of the style. description { The arvernes style for ordinary maps downloaded from Geofabrik. } Francois --

The version, short and long descriptions would be taken from the first style discovered and not from the appropriate style. Other cases would alread list OK. Also rename test so that it gets run by the build process and fix it up.
