Feedback to inc/name in default style

Hi, just a feedback, not sure if anybody is interested. The default style provided along with mkgmap includes a inc/name file. Line 18 ref=* & (operator!=* & brand!=*) { name '${ref} ${name}' | '${ref}' } leads in Greece to names where there is a reference in front of the city / village name. E.g. Hi. A question on one sided objects that are not only horisontal or vertical. In the Style manual (pdf), on page 13, there is an example: natural=cliff { name '${name} cliff' | 'cliff' } [0x10501 resolution 22] This is indeed a very nice example. Map data specifies that the rights side is the lower side. https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag%3Anatural%3Dcliff Now, is there some proper way to draw an TYP image to make sure that it indicates the up and the down side of the cliff when drawn on a garmin unit and follows the edge? regards Karl

Styles, typ and multiple languages

Hi. I am looking into a pattern where a name of a map point is given in a local word, which is not easy for foreigners. Instead of showing the name as the name, i would like to move it into the information which becomes available when clicking on a point on a Garmin device. Hence leaving the name empty or removed. Example: Say we have a lean-to shelter somewhere in Sweden. The name is set as: "Vindskydd rastaplatsen". For any foreigner, this may not say a lot. Whereas in the TYP file it is defined with the description: .. String=Lean to shelter String6=0x07,Vindskydd String7=0x15,Schronienie String10=0x0f,Gapahuk etc. etc. .. So when pointing/hovering this object on the GPS unit, i will tell me in the local language (which is set up on the unit) what it is (taken from the TYP file). When clicking the item, i will get the info page with additional details, and here is the name. But the question is now: how do i get the additional details to the info page? Can i just add any tag an it will show? Would something like this work? tourism=lean_to | (amenity=shelter & shelter_type=lean_to) {add info = '$ {name}'; delete name} [0x2b05 resolution 24] Is it otherwise possible to define multiple name tags, one per language? name = general name name:en = English name name:se = Swedish name so that the device will pick up the correct one based on the language settings? highway labels display in Garmin Montana 700

Hi guys, I'm trying to figure out this weird behavior: My style and typ define Nolabel for highways at resolutions higher than 24 for most highways. And basecamp properly displays this way, there are no labels at zoom 3km or 10km or higher. But the same map on the montana still displays the highway labels regardless of the zoom level. Any idea why? What is the diference betweeen: ExtendedLabels=Y FontStyle=Nolabel or ExtendedLabels=N Thanks

Commit r4590: Fix invalid overview map if options --overview-dem-dist and --dem and --order-by-decreasing-area are combined. Disable --order-by-decreasing-area for overview map in this situation.

Garmin Topo Europe map

Hello guys, I've just discovered the Garmin TopoActive Europe map based on OpenStreetMap data. This map is sold at a price of 50€ or is pre-installed on some new devices. I've just seen it on the device of one of my friends and it looks very good. I'm surprised to see that for West Europe, it takes only 2.8GB and is quite complete (index for search, routable, ...). For now, I generate my own maps based on your excellent tool but the result is much bigger (1.9GB only for France with probably more details). So, my question is: does anybody have a similar configuration (style files and command line) to obtain a result like the Garmin TopoActive Europe ? Thanks, Pierre

maps overlaying each other

Hi. How can i avoid that a section of a map (in a gmapsuppA.img) overlays some neighbouring map (in a different gmapsuppB.img) making it inaccessible on the GPS unit? Example, say i have Sweden and Norway, neighbouring countries. Data is downloaded from goefabrik per country. Splitting and generating map done per country. Sweden gets --draw-priority=50 and Norway gets 51. In the border areas, when the tiles are a bit outside of the country, the Norwegian map overlays the Swedish, details from both maps are visible but one cannot click on a point on the Swedish (lower) map because the empty Norwegian map is drawn above. --transparent option is not used to avoid other non-wanted transparency. --bounds is used. --add-boundary-nodes-at-admin-boundaries is used. Is there some good way to avoid this issue, to make sure that details from the lower map can be accessed? Perhaps make the splitter more strict on the borders? regards Karl

splitter performance with "osm.pbf" compared to "o5m"

Hi all, I noticed that splitter has a major performance lag on osm.pbf files compared to o5m. splitting off my DACH region in pbf format takes 15min 45sec, while splitting the same region in o5m format is finished after 5min 17sec. So it takes almost 3 times as long splitting pbf data. mkgmap on the other hand has almost no difference at all when building the DACH map from the pbf-tiles, compared to o5m-tiles. mkgmap with pbf takes 12min 28sec, with o5m 12min 09sec. here are my command lines: java -ea -XX:+AggressiveHeap -jar splitter-r597/splitter.jar > splitter.log --geonames-file=cities15000.zip --mapid=65000001 --output=pbf --precomp-sea=sea-latest.zip --write-kml=dach.kml --keep-complete --overlap=0 --max-nodes=1200000 dach.osm.pbf java -ea -XX:+AggressiveHeap -jar splitter-r597/splitter.jar > splitter.log --geonames-file=cities15000.zip --mapid=65000001 --output=o5m --precomp-sea=sea-latest.zip --write-kml=dach.kml --keep-complete --overlap=0 --max-nodes=1200000 dach.o5m Any ideas why pbf splitting is so slow compared to o5m splitting ?
