Split gmapsupp.img

As far a I know, mkgmap is able to produce unlimited size gmapsupp files, but SD cards and internal device memories have a limit of 4 GB in a single file. To overcome that limit, recent versions of Garmin City Navigator maps are split into several gmapsupp that work as a single one in devices which include them. Would it be possible to add an option to mkgmap, so that it automatically splits gmapsupp when you process a map that is larger than 4 GB?

Version mkgmap-r4587 was committed by gerd on Thu, 22 Oct 2020 Improve AngleChecker (patch arcHeading_v2.patch by Ticker Berkin with small changes) "Move decision about when to use compactDir initialHeadings from RouteNode to AngleChecker. The current code checks if any headings from a RouteNode share the same compactDir/4-bit sector and, if so, revert to the full/8-bit value. Overlaid roads triggered this, also sharp angles that couldn't be widened, probably when many paths converge at a road. AngleChecker::fixSharpAngles was coded on the basis that compactDirs are used and it tested/increased angles based on this 4-bit step, but if these are then represented in 8-bit format, the encode angle could be much (up to 22.5 degrees) less that the code was expecting and result in turning delays in route calculations. Recode fixSharpAngles to work in degrees but choose the thresholds to be good for compactDirs. Test the resultant angles and only use compactDirs if there are no roads in the same or adjacent 4-bit sectors. Not allowing Adjacent is necessary because, in compactDirs format, if there is a path in the opposite sector to the road and the road continuation is the adjacent sector, Garmin gives a "turn to stay on road" pop-up, but with 8-bit headings it doesn't. This is slightly different from the following case because this concerns an angle that doesn't need to be "unsharpened" as it isn't permitted for vehicles to make this turn. When increasing an angle, change the heading of the lower class/speed road in preference to the major road. This helps prevent the "turn to stay on road" type pop-ups when the lead-off road was more straight-on than the main road and one-way tagging possibly missing. Handle simple (<= 2 RouteArcs) RouteNodes as special cases, giving slight efficiency improvements. Add some diagnostics for showing RouteNodes and RouteArcs in an area. splitter questions

Hi. I am trying to split data for some 15 countries. First step is to combine the country data (with osmconvert) to one large o5m file and then try to split the combined file. The o5m file is about 14 GB in size. When running splitter i give java -Xmx1600m options to splitter are: --max-nodes=1500000 --no-trim Splitter calculates around 640 areas/tiles to be created. If i understand correctly, ways are parsed completely and then starts relations. After 100 000 relations i get: ***** Full GC ***** and soon thereafter: Exception in thread "main" Exception in thread "worker-0" java.lang.OutOfMemoryError: GC overhead limit exceeded... and many more lines. After this, one thread (out of two) dies but the other seems to hang doing nothing... and i have to manually kill it later. Now, i can give java a little bit more memory to java, say up to 1800m. setting --max-nodes= larger should use less memory says documentation. With a larger max-nodes, will those tiles be faster or slower to display on a GPS unit? What is a reasonable value, 10 000 000 nodes or 2 000 000? Would --max-areas help my situation? If i use --max-areas=350 (approx half of total expected tiles), based on your experience would it be enough, or shall i better try with a value of 220 (~1/3 of the total tiles)? Regards Karl

Resurrect adjust-turn-headings

Hi I use mkgmap/Garmin a lot for road routing and driving and frequently find cases where 1/ exit roads cause pop-ups telling me to turn to stay on the main road. 2/ an obvious turn is needed to stay on the same road and no pop-up is generated. These were some of problems that --adjust-turn-headings with code in RouteNode.java::tweezeArcs() was designed to solve. I'd like to have a go at reinstating it and tweaking it a bit to see if I can overcome some of the problems mentioned in some of the threads, eg http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/Possible-problem-with-adjust-turn-headin gs-td5851790.html http://gis.19327.n8.nabble.com/What-is-the-idea-behind-adjust-turn-head ings-td5851885.html before it was removed in r3649. I'm considering putting the code in imgfmt/app/net/AngleChecker.java Case 2/ can have further complications because OSM doesn't provide information when you have to give way as you turn to stay on the same road. Another pop-up I'd like to see is the minor road you wish to stay on is intersected by a more major road and you have to give way. Does anyone know if there is any way of triggering this? Ticker

I'm working on Spanish translation of mapnik.txt file. It's still a work in progress, but in order to avoid conflicts with changes announced by Karl (7770) I send a diff with current state. I've chosen String5 for Spanish, as it was the first unused number.

Disconnected map sections, types in TYP-files.

Hi. Still on my learning path, and thanks for good documents, which have helped a lot. Now i have one observation and a few questions. 1. i observe that in the map created (mkgmap 4585) i can see disconnected map sections, they usually show up as a thin white line in the map, often easier to see over water or darker areas. The gap sometimes makes the routing calculations fail if the gap is in the routing direction and big enough. I have observed these gaps not inly in the maps have made, but also at opentopomap, but not with garmin.opensteetmap.nl (to mention some examples). Pictures can be provided if wanted. Is there a proper way to eliminate these gaps when generating the maps? 2. When working with TYP files, i have read: If a polygon type is not listed in this section, then it will not be displayed at all. Is this valid? If it is, then it means i really have to add every single item which may be generated and which is on the map, otherwise i risk loosing information without even knowing, say if i want to change very small portions from how the device displays something. I have found that there some information sets that cover a lot of types that garmin devices can show, but is it possible to extract a list from mkgmap, for example extracting the default set? Is the example mapnik.txt file complete or just an example? If i didn't make errors, it seems there is a difference between generating gmapsupp with no TYP and this example TYP. 3. >From which type number can i define my own type to avoid collission with existing types? I am thinking of adding handling for aerialways. 4. Related to the polygon amenity=parking and displaying of a picture. on maps such as from garmin.openstreetmap.nl, the polygon for amenity=parking displays the same parking symbol (garmin default, round with red P and black border) as for a point amenity=parking. I tried generating the individual tiles with the style present from mkgmap using --style-file=path/styles/, in which i see a mapping in the polygons file: amenity=parking | parking=surface [0x05 resolution 22] But even with this, the parking polygons do not show any picture/symbol. Routing problem on GPSMAP 276Cx

Hi all might be i stumbled again over a silly problem on my GPSMAP 276Cx. Try to route from my Hometown Hürtgenwald to Bad Honnef. The most obvious way to do that is using the ferry Rolandseck <-> Bad Honnef. MapSource will use it but it seems, that the Garmin Device refuse to use any ferry routing, it chooses always a routing using bridges.
