Hi Rather simple question re updating to new version of mkgmap. To update to new version of mkgmap do you only need to extract the mkgmap.jar file and copy it over to your own directory with your own styles and typ files? Cheers

overviewmap, cyrillic fonts and cp65001

Sorry guys, think I've found the next potential problem: I'm building a map of the European part of Russia, obviously containing cyrillic city names and lot more... and we're also trying to use the 'quite new' overviewmap feature (I like it, btw). If I have code-page=1251 in the config file for mkgmap, the map itself aswell as the overview map (pressing ctrl-G in Basecamp) look properly. But if I do the same having code-page=65001 (for utf-8) in the cfg file for mkgmap, the map itself looks good (proper cyrillic city names, e.g) but the city labels on the overviewmap looks scrap (again ctrl-g in Basecamp to hide the normal map), looks like the overviewmap part doesn't recognise utf-8 and makes something wrong there. You need screenshots ? Anything else ? (btw: can I attach the screenshots directly to the mail or do I need to upload them to somwhere and post the link here ?) Utilizing route=bicycle relations in long-distance routing

As we all know, bicycle routing is hard. Unlike motor vehicle traffic, where there is a clear hiearchy of roads, the bicycle road network consists of all sorts of roads. In my area, there are no clear 'bicycle trunk roads' or 'bicycle motorways' that could be used as the backbone of a longer journey. I guess that the situation could be better in more bicycle-friendly countries, such as Denmark or the Netherlands. I was thinking that maybe we could tweak the bicycle routing by increasing the weight or speed of ways that belong to a route=bicycle relation, or by defining 'wormholes' between some points of the relation. I guess that this is not doable in the default style, which aims to be 'neutral' for all modes of transport, but I guess it could make a huge difference in a bicycle-oriented map. FWIW, I just defined a 25km route relation that could be useful for testing: http://www.openstreetmap.org/browse/relation/3252216 IMO, this is much better than the NCN 4 in this area. Has anyone experimented with this kind of tweaks to routing? Would this bypass the limitation that the Garmin Edge 705 seems to ignore cycleways for the middle section of a route? Marko

Quoting special characters (singlequote) in the style files

Gents, I'm having the following problem: for a Portuguese translation (other languages like French will have the same problem) of a map I have the following rule in the points file of my style directory: # Wasserturm. [point, closedway] man_made = water_tower & name = * {name '${name} (Caixa d'água)'} [0x6500 resolution 24] You notice there is a 'singlequote' between the words "Caixa d" and "água". Unfortunately the build process doesn't run through... I have to change this to a backquote (this one here: ` ) to get it running through. I was looking around on the web how to quote special characters inside the style files, especially the singlequote which is needed also for internal things inside the style files. Unfortunatelly I was not able to find anything. Did I miss something ? Or is there no way (yet) to have a singlequote inside a name in the style files ? Any feedback is appreciated. Simplify setting access tags in the mergeroads branch

Hi all, I am still thinking about how to simplify setting the access tags in the mergeroads branch. Felix posted his concerns that the new handling requires much more style coding. At the moment my favourite changes are to add two more actions: 1. addaccess: This adds the given value to all access fields (only if they are not already set) 2. setaccess: This sets the given value to all access fields (only if they are not already set) The mkgmap:access tag will no longer be evaluated. @Felix: I don't want to add an option so that you can set which values are evaluated as no. I am not convinced that it is required. mkgmap merge-roads branch fails to compile maps for me if I use rev. 2728 or newer. Hi I have been experimenting with mkgmap and struck and issue with the search features on my Garmins. My 62s using the spell search will find items such as lakes and huts (I am a bushwalker) but my Rino 650 can only find cities under the point of interests. I am using the same img files created as per below Windows 7 bat file. Any clues?
