Sorting the zip codes

Hi There was a bit of discussion about postal codes last month and I don't know if we can make them work in all cases, but a first step is to sort them in the img tiles. They certainly should be sorted like everything else, so I am committing a fix to do that. My OSM UK maps don't have many postcodes in them, so if someone who is interested in working zip codes please test in a suitable area. In the few cases where I tested in MapSource it correctly filtered by post code. ..Steve

edge 705 stuck with cities index

Hi, I successfully created OSM maps of great britain for my Edge 705. I create the img file with --index and use bounds either I created myself using osmosis or from precompiled (from navmaps.eu). The Edge 705 loads the img map correctly and address search is working properly. However, when accessing the function "Cities", which lists the closest cities, the Edge freezes for 1 or 2 minutes before displaying cities (ordered by distance from current location). What I noticed is that between some cities names there are also blank lines, as if there were blank entries in the cities list. Scrolling the cities list (which may be possible after 1-2 minutes of freeze) is faster when there are none of these blank lines, which may suggest they are responsible for the problem. But when one of these blank cities appears, then the Edge freezes again. Disabling --index solves the problem, but address search is not available then. Furthermore, some cities are listed under GBR, but many others belong to "Country" with a tag "ABC". Is that an OSM tagging problem? Has anyone noticed this? I would be happy to help diagnose the problem, what is your advice? Many thanks, Eric

Calculate offest

Hi, I'm trying to understand how the image-files works. Regarding to this page: https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/MDR_Subfile_Format I can calculate the offset for e.g. MDR1 by the 4 located at 0x01D So if I have C4 02 00 00 in Big Endian it is 3288465408 and in Little Endian it's 708. (Little Endian looks better for me, but I'm not sure... ) This means 708 bytes (or at position 0x2C4) from the beginnig of the mdr-file I can find the MDR1-Table?! Thanks //Martin

Hi, attached patch simplifies the code to join ways. The original code is slower (and in my eyes harder to understand) because it (sometimes) adds single points to the beginning of an ArrayList, which means System.arraycopy() for each insert. [Patch] Reduce memory footprint of MapElement

Hi, the class MapElement uses a HashMap with default size to store a max. of 8 different, but hard coded String keys. Explanation for the mkgmap optimization options

Hi all, I'm at the point where it seems that my map overcharges the GPSr (probably too much details). mkgmap offers some optimization options: --reduce-point-density=NUM Simplifies the ways with the Douglas Peucker algorithm. NUM is the maximal allowed error distance, by which the resulting way may differ from the original one. This distance gets shifted with lower zoom levels. Recommended setting is 4, this should lead to only small differences (Default is 2.6, which should lead to invisible changes) --reduce-point-density-polygon=NUM Allows to set the maximal allowed error distance for the DP algorythm to be applied against polygons. Recommended setting is 8. --merge-lines Try to merge lines. This helps the simplify filter to straighten out longer chunks at lower zoom levels. Decreases file size more. Increases paint speed at low zoom levels. At the moment this option causes routing errors. Use only if routing is not needed in your map. --min-size-polygon=NUM Removes all polygons smaller than NUM from the map. This reduces map size and speeds up redrawing of maps. Recommended value is 8 to 15, default is 8. Questions: - Could someone explain the options more detailed ? - What are the pros and cons of the different options ? - What is your own experience with optimization ? - Is the routing affected by the options ? Given this wide usage, this patch allows "," as separator. Additional (), which mark phases of eclipse, are handled explicit and not as separator. - Ronny Klier

Serious Bug - Mkgmap creating map that puts news GPS (confirmed etrex 30, Oregon 550) into bootloop

Well two days ago someone told me, that if he puts my map onto his GPS it's not booting anymore (or bootlooping after trying to load maps). The really strange thing is, I cannot find out at all why this happens. If I only transfer half of the map, it is not bootlooping, if I transfer the other half, not bootlooping. If I transfer both halves as separate gmapsupp.img files, still okay. However if I transfer the map as one full gmapsupp.img - then neither Oregon 550 (newest beta firmware) nor etrex 30 (several firmwares tried) doesn't start anymore. It does not matter if I create the gmapsupp.img with Mapsource, Mapinstall/Basecamp or mkgmap. It does not matter if I create --index with mkgmap on sending it. And it's not about the integrated contourlines (7*.img) -- exclude them, same problem. So here is the file for testing (do not install it on internal memory, else your GPS device may be ready for sending it in to Garmin). _*/ftp://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/openmtbmap/mtbfrance_broke.exe/*_ (note simply unpack this installer with 7zip-full on Linux - its lzma packed). Note, old GPS devices like Vista HCx cope fine with this map. I more or less give up trying to find the fault. However as this is the first time since a very long time, mkgmap created maps can potentially break a Garmin GPS - I post it to the list without knowing a way to figure the problem out. It has nothing to do with my style either I would suppose, only map for me where this happens.

Preprocessor for style files

My style file are becoming more and more complex. IMHO a (simple) preprocessor would be very helpful. Important features (analogue C preprocessor): - ##include (includes a text file) - ##define (defines a preprocessor var; also as command line option) - ##ifdef (checks if a preprocessor var is defined) - ##else (else for ##ifdef) - ##endif (end of ##ifdef) A simple example (for polygons): ##define BASECAMP ... ##include "indexrules.txt" ... ##ifdef BASECAMP # draw buildings building = * [0x13 resolution 20] ##endif ... Questions: - What do think of this proposal ? - Does anyone already uses an external preprocessor for the style files ?
