routing experiences, levels problem?

I have fairly recently used OSM maps I made with mkgmap in California and Arizona. The good news is that they basically work, including routing. This is in theory not news, but things seems tricky enough that I thought I'd mention it. In Grand Canyon Village (south rim), I found that at 20m-300m zoom (etrex vista hcx), there were no roads (but there were POIs). At 500m the roads appeared. Plus, I got RoadTrip to have a persistent crash on startup. So I wonder if the levels code is working right, and I have a basic question about what's going on. In the img, I think there are 6 levels, represented by some binary codepoints. There is a table mapping the 6 to actual zoom levels (or the other way around). The style 'options' file has the default list of levels. If this is more or less true, it would be nice to have more error checking, with the use of a level not listed in the levels definition causing an error. Quite likely I am totally off base here, but I wanted to report the odd behavior.

mdr version usage?

Hello, I tried to generate a map using the mdr version of mkgmap and I am a little bit confused. I use the following command lines: java -Dlog.config=..\logging.properties -Xmx3000M -jar mkgmap-r1260\mkgmap.jar --net --route --description="OSM Detroit area map" --mapname=10000001 Detroit_091003.osm java -Dlog.config=..\logging.properties -jar mkgmap-r1261mdr\mkgmap.jar --family-id=2804 --series-name="OSM Maps" --family-name="OSM Maps" --overview-mapname=Detroit --tdbfile --index 10000001.img First of all, I get some output that I do not quite understand: for section 11, use pointer size of 2 for section 10, use pointer size of 2 for section 7, use pointer size of 2 for section 5, use pointer size of 2 Then I get two img files: Detroit.img and Detroit_mdr.img. If I copy all the generated files to the appropriate directory I set up for MapSource, I can display the map but I have no index. I then tried to rename Detroit_mdr.img to Detroit.img. In this case, MapSource crashes at startup. Any help on what I am doing wrong here and how I can get a working index would be appreciated. Thanks, N.

Warnings from RoadDef

What's the meaning of this kind of warnings? ADVERTENCIA (RoadDef): RoadDef(A-5;A-66 Autovía del Suroeste, 23244883) discarding extra label (already have 4) What should I change in the logging.properties to avoid this kind of lines? Regards Carlos

Resolution and style files

Hello, I would like to understand how resolution in the style files works, as I build a gmapsupp.img file with four layers. Two of them are countour lines layers. One is for contour lines every 50m and 200m (elevation medium and major), and the second one is for minor elevation (every 10m). It works fine, except the resolution. Each layer uses its own style files and TYP file too. For 50m and 200m elevation, this is the style line file : contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_medium { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x21 resolution 22] contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_major { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x22 resolution 20] and for the 10me elevation, the style line file is that way : contour=elevation & contour_ext=elevation_minor { name '${ele|conv:m=>ft}'; } [0x20 resolution 22] The option files for both styles are the same : name_tag = name:fr, name levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18, 4:16 Now the problem: the contour lines for the three elevations are always shown on my Garmin GPS. I can zoom out, the map is fullfilled with those elevation contour lines. Is there something wrong with the way I define the resolution for each contour lines? Thank you. Francois --

Routing through bollard

Hi all, I have build a map with version 1247 and the following options: --latin1 --route --tdbfile --remove-short-arcs --add-pois-to-areas --link-pois-to-ways Mapsource and my Etrex routes me through the bollards on "Marktstraße" (setting was for motorcar). http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.3877&lon=6.71077&zoom=17&layers=B000FTF Is it possible to fix it? [PATCH v2] - name motorway exit roads from the exits' names

v2 - now based on r1260. ------------- Annoyingly, motorway exit POIs don't show up on my Nuvi so I thought that the next best thing would be to label the exit roads with the exit name (number). This patch does that in a generic way. It introduces a new facility: If a way (of highway type X) has a POI for its first point and that POI has a tag called X_name, set the way's name to that tag's value. So, if the exit POI (which should be positioned on the first point of the exit ramp) set's motorway_link_name to its name/ref, then the ramp will get that name. So the points style file has something like: highway=motorway_junction & ref=* { add motorway_link_name = '${ref}' name '${ref}' } highway=motorway_junction & name=* { add motorway_link_name = '${name}' name '${name}'} With the patch in place, you need to use the --link-pois-to-ways option for this to work. v2 - various changes - should now work with junctions that have more than 1 side road - should be able to treat exits from roundabouts in the same way as side roads. ------------------------- The attached patch (which also includes the drive-on-left patch because it's based on that) attempts to improve the quality of routing instructions so that when a turn off a road that doesn't involve a big heading change is required, the GPS should say "turn left/right" rather than "keep left/right". It can also reduce the number of "keep left/right" instructions you get when you are not leaving the main road but passing a junction that has a shallow turn (e.g. sometimes happens on motorways when it tells you to keep left/right even though you are not leaving the motorway). I have tested it a little and it appears to work. I expect there are situations where it does the wrong thing so it would be great if people could give it a go and see if it behaves OK. There isn't any option to enable the feature at the moment. If you use the patch, it will be enabled. It's currently issuing a warning for each change it makes but later that can be downgraded to info. Cheers, Mark

no_u_turn

When the turn restrictions were added was the no_u_turn restriction implemented as I have recently been told by my 605 to make a U turn where I have specifically added a no_u_turn restriction? I feel it's only fair to mention that some of these no_u_turn restrictions are flagged as invalid by JOSM but that is because it (wrongly in my opinion) seems to take the direction of the via way into account.
