Removal of --adjust-turn-headings option ok?

Hi all, see first http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/Possible-problem-with-adjust-turn-headings-t… and the discussion starting at http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/What-is-the-idea-behind-adjust-turn-headings… I'd like to remove the code and the option, I think it produces more or less unpredictable results and I found no problems with maps created without the option. I also plan to add a new option, maybe "--fix-sharp-angles", and it might cause trouble if we support both options. My understanding is that the --adjust-turn-headings option was created before we merged the "high-prec" branch and before the img format regarding routing info was fully understood. I guess it helped back in 2010 when it was coded but today it just seems to modify some heading values, sometimes creating really wrong routing info when a rather harmless heading change is "amplified" so that Garmin tries to avoid it. If you have examples which show that --adjust-turn-headings is needed, please post the OSM ids of the ways, so that I can add the behaviour to the new code for the "--fix-sharp-angles" option. Gerd

in the lines file is there a way to have primary, seconday, teritary and living streets with side street displayed . so that in the Header box more indication is given , so far only highway = motor way is is hboxed any iideas ? Stephen

trimmed tiles from splitter

Hello, when i split geofabrik-extracts from africa (or south-america or australia) i get empty spaces between tiles. This can be seen on the attached hardcopy. I'll generate Garmin-cards on a Windows-machine and my split-command is "O:\Java64\bin\javaw.exe" -Xmx24576m -jar "O:\OSM-Programme\Splitter\splitter.jar" --geonames-file="O:\OSM-ZusatzDaten\cities1000.zip" --precomp-sea="O:\OSM-ZusatzDaten\sea.zip" --no-trim --keep-complete=true --output=pbf --output-dir="C:\Users\manfred\AppData\Local\Temp\OSM-Split" --max-nodes=800000 --mapid=22010001 "O:\OSM-Daten\africa.osm.pbf" The problem is, that splitter trims empty areas from the tiles. This can be seen on the following extract from the log-output for two areas on the left upper edge, which lie side by side: Area 22010003 covers (16.0400390625,-30.8056640625) to (37.79296875,-22.1923828125) and contains 188502 nodes (23 %) Area 22010077 covers (27.1142578125,-21.3134765625) to (37.79296875,-17.75390625) and contains 441471 nodes (55 %) respectively Area 22010003: 747520,-1435648 to 1761280,-1034240 covers (0xb6800,0xffea1800) to (0x1ae000,0xfff03800) CV-Mindelo Area 22010077: 1263616,-993280 to 1761280,-827392 covers (0x134800,0xfff0d800) to (0x1ae000,0xfff36000) ES-Los Llanos de Aridane Here can be seen, that area from -22.1923828125 to -21.3134765625 respectively 0xfff03800 to 0xfff0d800 is not covered by any tile in the split. I thought, splitter-option "--no-trim" should prevent this. May be, i'm wrong with options in my split-command; may although be, it's an issue from the splitter. The attached zip-file contains the hardcopy from generated africa-card with empty stripes, the log-file with split-command and split-output and the GPX-file with the generated areas from splitter. Can anyone help me generating full-covered osm-cards? Thank you. Best regards.

Display of Labels on Maps

I have been trying to understand how the display of names and labels on map pages is controlled. I am talking about the following two cases: a) Labels that appear on the map itself which for the purposes here I will call 'Map Labels'. b) Names which appear in a box at the top of the GPS screen when the cursor is placed over an item on the map page which I will refer to as 'Cursor-Over' names. I appreciate the 'Map Label' display is partly controlled by the choice of type code for the polygon, line or point, but can this feature in any way be controlled by either the style configuration or the TYP file when a 'custom' extended code is used?. Also I would really like to be able to prevent the second feature ('Cursor-over' name) appearing. For example, I have line borders for polygons on my maps and I want to avoid the name appearing at the top sf the screen when the cursor touches the border line. I have tried with no description for the line in the TYP file then I get the word 'line' appearing in the top-of-screen box. Any advice welcome.

What is the idea behind --adjust-turn-headings?

Hi all, I understand that this option should help to produce good driving instructions. Anyhow, I wonder if the result is really better. The two screenshots show the difference at this node: http://www.openstreetmap.org/node/21725099 With --adjust-turn-heading I am told to turn left onto Orchideenstraße when the road is nearly straight because Rosenweg bends right. I'd prefer to see something like "straight on onto Orchideenstraße" instead, but it seems that Garmin doesn't produce this message, so I'd be happier without the additional message, as it forces me to search for a possibility to turn left where I have to move straight on. Before I can fix the additinal problems introduced by the naming of service roads I'd like to understand if this is the intended behaviour. Gerd

Possible problem with --adjust-turn-headings

Hi all, I fear the new housenumber code causes a problem in combination with --adjust-turn-headings. The new code may add a label to service roads so that previously unnamed roads now have a name. Later, the code for the --adjust-turn-headings option may use the labels of the roads at a crossing to find out which arc is the continuation of the incoming arc. It stops at the first match, and that may not be the best one, and it doesn't seem to care when there are other possible matches. As a result, the option sometimes "tweezes" headings without good reason, which may lead to wrong route calculations. I am not yet sure how to fix the code, as I think that there are other problems as well, but for now I think it is better to disable this option. Gerd

Hi Gerd, ideally I was looking for a solution where we had something like mkgmap:noindex in the style to cause the label to be omitted from the index. I had a look at implementing this but came unstuck because as far as I can tell, the code that adds the index creates this from data that it reads back from the img file, which of course doesn't contain any mkgmap specific information. There are a number of cases where mkgmap:noindex would be useful: In the case where highway shields are used, I would prefer not to include the road number in the address index, so that when you type "A" you just get road names beginning with A, instead of A1, A11, A135 etc. I allow (walking) routing along piers, the edges of carparks and other non-highways. If these have names, they also get included as road names in the address index and I would prefer to omit them. I came up with the -- omit-highway-refs-from-index code as an alternative that achieved something of what I wanted, but if you can suggest a way to do this from the style, that would be better. Hello, i saw your blog in the internet concerning edge 705. You wrote, that it is possible to make a firmware update via SD-card. Is this possible? If yes how should i do this? Just copy the GCD file on the SD card? My edge shows a similar phenomenon, it can’t store any activity data on the USB mass storage but you can access its mass storage via PC / Mac. I would like to update the firmware again but did not succeed. Did you solve your problem? Thank you and regards Peter
