Performance of POI search on the Device

Hi all, searching for POIs on my Oregon often is very frustrating. It virtually takes forever. Yesterday I noticed that some POI types are reasonably fast, while others are 10 times slower. I assume that this is some sort of index Problem. For example using my DACH map, built with mkgmap-r4506, map size 2.7GiB on my Oregon 750t - searching for Gas Stations takes some 5 seconds - searching for Bank/ATM takes some 50 seconds - searching for Any-/All Poi types also takes some 50 seconds for the first Elements to appear in the list. If I can trust my memory, in the past, maybe some 2 years ago, searching for Gas Stations was just as slow as any other POI type. What can I do to get the POI search fast for any POI type in the map ? I tried --make-poi-index but this didn't make any noticeable difference. Just another idea.... Is it possible to make the car park a (pseudo) node that is on all the paths that connect to the car park? Unable to search for Address - GPSMAP64s

I finally got my map conversion working and the maps load fine. I can pick a location on the map and routing works as well as ever (there were always issues over the shortest distance/fastest route with Garmins). The problem is I can't search by address, which is kind of important. Only cities on the Basemap are being found, and only a few addresses. If I zoom in on a point on the map the street being searched for is shown on the map and in fact I can pick an address by that method. Hi Gerd, thanks for the version r4565. The option --x-keep-empty-value-tags works like expected. Perhaps it would be better, i change my classification process a little bit and generate for my "private" tags additional name tags (LINE_MOTORWAY -> LINE_MOTORWAY_NAME). That increase the osm files but anyway. Frank Stinner

Hi, with a old mkgmap version (mkgmap-r4286) i use a rule like that (i use my own classification for polygons): area_building="" { name '${addr:housenumber}' } [0x01 level 1] area_building=* { name '${area_building}' } [0x01 level 2] If in the OSM-file a line like that <tag k='area_building' v='my home' /> it matches and in the map i have a polygon with type 0x01 and the name 'my home'. The line <tag k='area_building' v='' /> it matches and in the map i have a polygon with type 0x01 and the housenumber or nothing as name. With the actual mkgmap version (mkgmap-r4562) this not work. With v='' i have no match. Is this a error or a feature ;) . How can i match this? With best regards Frank Stinner

How to search in mkgmap-dev archives ?

Hi all, This is my first post in the list. First I want to thanks all developers of mkgmap. The ability to put up-to-date (and routeable !) maps from openstreetmap in my old Garmin GPS is simply fantastic. And thumb up for GPL licensing. So my first question, before to ask others, is : how to search in mkgmap-dev archives ? Threads don't seem referenced in search engines. Regards Pierre

Road speed through urban areas

Hello, I'm a mapper in OpenStreetMap. We have a user that uses mkgmap with Garmin devices and he's setting road class inside cities lower than the local convention to get Garmin to avoid being routed through slow roads, which is bad practice. [4] I'd like to ask for some advice on how to help him set mkgmap to avoid such problems without disrespecting community guidelines. I've downloaded the source code [1] and read through the default styles in ./trunk/resources/styles/default/ . If I understood correctly, it sets road_speed=3 (60km/h [2]) for highway=secondary and road_speed=2 (40km/h [2]) for highway=tertiary. Those are reasonable in rural areas, but too fast in urban areas, where average speeds usually drop by around half of their real speed limit.I also found rules for handling the speed limit in maxspeed=*, but it seems like his issue would persist even when this tag is provided in map data. I think it might make sense to write a custom style [3] setting road_speed=2 for highway=secondary and road_speed=1 (20km/h [2]) for highway=tertiary. Perhaps this would then break some rural routes. I've found that Garmin supports traffic data, [5] but I'm unsure if this works with maps converted using mkgmap, as I don't own any Garmin device. Do you know?
