Handling of Multipolygons in Tile Splitter

Hi, I ran into a problem with flooded areas around the river Rhine. A europe.osm.pbf from geofabrik.de dated 2011-07-31 was used. I extracted a contiguous area containing roughly Germany and France using osmosis. This extract was spit up into 369 parts using tile splitter r179. After they have been converted using mkgmap I recognized at least 3 flooded areas at the river Rhine on my Oregon 550. The riverbank areas extended wide into the land. The riverbank in that europe.osm was defined by a really large multipolygon. (in the meantime someone else split up the gigantic multipolygon into a number of smaller multipolygons). This large multipolygon consists of 320 ways (counted inner and outer) and extends over over at least 4 of 5 tiles that were created by tile splitter. I had a look at one of the tile-files an noticed, that tile splitter removed all the ways that were completely outside the bounding box of the respective tile. However the multipolygon contained all 320 ways as members, but most of them (and the corresponding nodes) were not included in the tile-file. Im not sure wether tile splitter did some processing in order to close the multipolygon along the bounding box, but probably this ist not the case. This incomplete information in the tile file probably makes it impossible for mkgmap to correctly clip the multipolygon along the bounding box and possibly leads to the flooded areas. As I already mentioned, this large multipolygon is no more present in the actual osm database. But I probably will be able to provide some test data if required as I still have the original data and can reproduce this behavior. Regards Wolfgang

mailing list problem from Aug 8

Hi I thought the mailing list was a bit quiet so I investigated a couple of times but only just found a problem today, since the list in fact was pretty quiet ;) From sometime late on Aug 8th any post sent to the mailing list were not delivered straight away. As far as I know all posts were queued and have now just been delivered. There was one on the 11th and three this evening. However, if you did post something since the 8th and it hasn't now turned up then you can assume that you need to repost it. ..Steve

non-numeric mapname

this might be asked for a millionth time or so, but a quick search didn't reveal much. are there any devices that support non-numeric mapname ? (not description). if not, maybe it's worth disallowing them by default (and providing an override switch like --really-non-numeric-mapname ;) ) just wasted 15 minutes on this, and i recall that i did the same when initially starting with mkgmap... -- Rich

MDR6 description in wiki

Hi, my question is mainly directed to Steve Hosgood: You have added the description of MDR6 to the wiki (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/MDR_Subfile_Format#MDR…) In mkgmap the MDR6 is currently used for ZIP codes only. Do you remember how you gathered the information that MDR6 is a sorted list of cities? Maybe the MDR6 is more than a zip code list only. WanMil

includes for style file?

Hi, if I look at the changes for the style files from the locator branch: this are a lot of identical rules in several files. My experience with software development is, that it is very difficult to have that in sync over the time. Isn't it possible to work with include files for styles, so that you have only one master file, or to put it in another file which will always be evaluated? Most of their Garmin compatible maps are compiled with cgpsmapper, not mkgmap, and there are several incompatibilities between the two compilers. Mkgmap dropping data

Hello I try to render a Garmin map of Hungary from OSM data with my own rules and typ file. At first I used the Tile Splitter, but whatever I did, I didn't manage to render a good map. Then I extracted county borders (Hungary has 19 counties), and used Osmosis with polygon borders to split the data. I managed it. But meanwhile CLC data was imported (I think this might be the culprit) and I can't do it again. Four counties have only half the data in Mapsource. They are not big, so I don't think that the size is the problem. I use MapSetToolkit with cgpsMapper to upload to MapSource. Here is an example of how I use mkgmap: java -Xmx1024M -ea -jar mkgmap.jar --charset=latin2 --route --style-file=c:\osm\mkgmap\resources\styles\herrbert --family-id=5000 -c c:\osm\osmdata\counties\template.args --tdbfile --description="OSM Hungary" 50000.typ I fI use the route option, cpreview crashes. I used osmosis with the following options: completeWays=no completeRelations=no clipIncompleteEntities=true I think this is not optimal for such a map, because I can't route between two counties (ways are split without a common node).
