Question about Resolutions in Default Style.

I would like to understand a few statements in the default mkgmap style: The default 'option' file defines resolutions as: levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18, 4:16. Yet in 'polygons' file the following line exists: natural=sea [0x32 resolution 10] and in 'lines' file the following line exists; natural=coastline [0x15 resolution 12] Do these lines have the same effect in this style as the following: natural=sea [0x32 resolution 16] natural=coastline [0x15 resolution 16] or is there a subtle difference?. Also, in the 'lines' file the following statement exists: highway=* & area!=yes [0x07 ] Is the effect of a match to draw [0x07] at ALL resolutions? Thanks, Bill.

Idea: remove non-water polygons from the default style?

Users have started complaining that Corine landuse imports are overlapping water areas in Finland. If the Garmin first draws the water and then the other landuse (forest, farm, etc.), the waters will be hidden and the map will be badly useable for navigation. What if we separated most polygons to a separate map layer? For non-terrain uses, I cannot see any use of landuse polygons, possibly apart from building polygons. One reason why polygons are currently needed is the --add-pois-to-areas option. That problem could be solved by implementing a polygon style file action 'add_poi'. If we start splitting split stuff to separate map layers, another good candidate would be power lines, pipe lines and such. They are also mostly useful for navigating in terrain, I would guess. There could also be a separate layer for boundary=*. But, if we start adding layers, it would be useful to generate multiple map layers in a single parsing pass. Otherwise the parsing time is going to dominate. Some time ago, a style that would generate no output would require 2.5 minutes or 3 minutes for processing the Geofabrik extract of Finland (about 90 megabytes in osm.pbf format) on my dual-core system. Also each routes-* style needs about this much processing time, because they do not generate much output. About half a minute per layer could be saved by disabling the processing of multipolygon relations, but I guess that we could reduce the processing time to 2 minutes for all routes-* layers if we could generate multiple *.img files from the same input tile using some special style action syntax. Example: Boundary A10 (admin_level=10) lies in A8 (admin_level=8), A4 and A2. All elements in A10 are automatically in A8, A4 and A2. So the admin_levels 8, 4 and 2 are defined just be assigning the admin_level=10 boundary. This has two advantages: 1. Perfomance: Time for index creation with bounds option can be reduced by 25% max. 2. Bugfix: Boundary information was inconsistent for elements located in two boundaries of the same level, e.g. a street crossing a city border and a region border could have created one city assigned to both regions. Now a city assigned by the bounds locator should always have the same region and country.

Routing - Documentation and Best Practice

Currently I'm working on the routing feature of my garmin maps and run into some problems. I was looking for detailed information concerning routing (incl. best pratice) but couldn't find such a document. Question: Could someone point me to such a documentation or describe "the best practice"? Hi, I'm trying to run gmapibuilder to convert my maps for Mac format but I get an error message 'Could not open '*.img' for reading' everytime. I'm using Windows Vista, installed pyton 2.4, and I run this command: gmapi-builder.py -t 10010000.tdb -b 10010000.img -s 10010.typ -m 10010000_mdr.img -i 10010000.mdx *.img I tried it with several other osm maps, other paths, specified the path names like c:\temp\*.img, but nothing helps.
