Problem with --index and 812KB _mdr.img files & "warning using default sort"

1. Could mkgmap clean up broken 812KB mdr_img files if creating crashes due to insufficient memory? This is a potential threat as the _mdr.img is broken but hard to notice if you don't look at error notices). 2. What does the "warning using default sort" thingy mean. Can it be overcome or if not could it be switched off?

I thought that this might be of interest to us mkgmap folks. Do we know how Garmin is storing this stuff? Is it only something for NT maps? missing street in mapsource address search

Hello, i've found a problem with mapsource and street search: i've created a map with r1896 and the germany/schleswig-holstein data from geofabrik. I've installed the map with the nsis-installer and can search for Wihlemstrasse in Kiel. If i try to search for Wihelminenstrasse, the street is shown in the search list but: "Die ausgewählte Straße ist in diesem Kartenprodukt nicht zulässig" (The selected street isn't allowed in this map product) I've tested to search with my garmin etrex and the town doesn't show in the list of towns. The mkgmap parameters are --max-jobs --style-file=%styles%\basemap_style\ --description=Openstreetmap --max-jobs --country-name=Germany --country-abbr=DE --area-name="DE_%DATE%" --latin1 --code-page=1252 --gmapsupp --nsis --keep-going --transparent --name-tag-list='name:de,name,name:latin,name:en' --x-tdbfile --add-pois-to-areas --make-all-cycleways --link-pois-to-ways --remove-short-arcs --net --route --index --location-autofill=1 --generate-sea=multipolygon,extend-sea-sectors,close-gaps=1000 --adjust-turn-headings --reduce-point-density=4 --reduce-point-density-polygon=8 --merge-lines --family-id=4 --product-id=45 --series-name=OSM-AllInOne-sh-bmap --family-name=aio-sh-OSM --mapname=63240345 --draw-priority=10 ..\*.osm.gz basemap.TYP I'm using the style files from the aio map. regards Rudolf

Exception building map

NSIS installer improvements phase 2 v1

Hi, Thanks to Thorsten and Minko for they report about the TYP file issue. It also looks like I overlooked the index files so in the current mkgmap, the registry keys for the MDX and MDR files will be created regardless of those files actually existing. This was an easy fix and attached is a file patch that takes care of it. Hopefully someone can commit it. Thanks, N.

[index] Automatic location completion

After the index branch has been developed so far that we can use the results in MapSource (thanks to Steve!!) there is a big need for a mechanism to fill missing location information. There has been a lot of discussion about that. It stopped because it was quite theoretical (from my point of view). Therefore I have started to implement a prototype osm hook that tries to complete the missing location information. I think the is_in tag is quite problematic therefore I decided to use the addr tags. Attached is a *very* early implementation that makes use of the boundary polygons. It checks all nodes and ways/polygons within all boundary polygons and fills the missing addr tags. I think this is a better foundation for the discussion how we want to fill the missing location information. Before flaming me about terrible code please be aware that: * the patch is not optimized * it's version 1, so far away from handling all situations / countries * it's a very early prototype I would be happy if you try it and make some proposals how it could be improved. Some improvements I already know and thinking about: * The new hook should run after the multipolygon finishing and not before * The is_in tag should be handled * boundary information propagation => First go through all boundaries and add the information from higher levels to lower ones, i.e. add addr:district to all city boundaries within that district * Use landuse=residential information in combination with the place nodes * In case a boundary level is missing (which mostly will be the case for countries admin_level=2), select the addr information from all nodes and ways within a boundary by using the most used addr-tag value. (in germany the addr:country=DE should be the most used) Have fun! WanMil

Moin, I had some trouble getting the search in Mapsource working when building my maps with r1871. Finally I got it working, but only after removing the --overview-mapname option. Doers the --index option not work in combination with --overview-mapname? Is there any documentation about th enew --index feature yet? I haven't followed the development, so I am not sure, what is needed for the search feature. (location=autofill? boundaries? place POIs?) Gruss Torsten

Encoding problems

Hello Latest versions of mkgmap stopped working correctly with windows-1257 encoding (I no longer see Lithuanian letters on Colorado and QLandkarteGT). Is this related to the fact that sort/cp1257.txt is not provided yet? I'm NOT using --index option yet but using --lower-case and --charset=windows-1257. Thank you P.S. r1877 -- Tomas Straupis

searching for housenumbers

I don't really see why all the work on matching country/city to streets is necessary, as it should be enough if addresses via housenumbers that are present in OSM as such (containing all needed infos) would be good enough. Is there any knowledge on how house numbers are encoded in garmin maps or not? Once searching for housenumbers would be possible, I think it would not take too long til people enter that data. Searching for streets as streets could be reserved upon special calls in the style-file (e.g. for hiking trails or cycle routes).
