Using the locator branch, I noticed that many cities in Austria are not findable anymore. The problem is that there are words like "Gemeinde Mödling" or "Bezirk Mödling" or "county XYZ". There should be a list where one can enter words that get deleted. That is because for the boundary it is the correct name, but not for searching a street. Also there are problems in Austria in Vienna. Vienna is a state and a city, and ideally it should be possible to enter either the district or the city into the city field, in order to find a street. Currently it is not possible to properly separate cities outside Vienna from districts inside Vienna, as they have the same admin_level. But for the ise tags, there is a correct specification telling you that districts are not cities (from the standpoint of the admin_level, it is correct however to classify them the same as small cities outside of Vienna). So in effect if one does not enter specific rules for Vienna, address search can never work as expected. Admin_level was never intended to be used for address searching, hence taking it is flawed and will not provide correct results. Ise is intended for address searching, but mkgmap does not use it. In general after using the locator branch, I more and more think, that the whole matching is completly the wrong way of doing. Much better to support real addresses as entered in OSM, and not do so much guessing. Especially support housenumbers, as at least in Germany and Austria housenumbers including full ise tags are becoming the norm, and not the exception. Only footways, pathes, or tracks should be matched, as they usually have no real address - but then it's rare that one searches for a specific path/track/footway, only real use would therefore be

Howto debug map problem that city in map can not be found in MapSource

Hi, I created a map of italy using latest mkgmap with option location-autofill=bounds. I noticed that I cannot find small city Oppeano but I can find city Zevio (which is close to Oppeano). Last time I made a map of Italy I could find Oppeano ( unfortunately old osm input and mkgmap version is not available any more ) Now I would like to know how to effectively debug such an issue. - It could be a change in OSM. - It could be a OSM boundary problem. - it could be that this city is in the index, but it can not be found. - ... is there for example a tool which converts the city index into text? thanks, Stefan

OT: Edge 705 firmware hacking

Two weeks ago, the USB interface of my Edge 705 broke in such a way that the unit no longer enters the mass storage mode. I saw something similar twice earlier when the FAT file system in the internal memory was corrupted, but back then I was able to force it by repeatedly pressing the Power button while the unit was connected to the computer. Now the FAT seems to be OK: the base map is accessible, etc. Also the connector hardware looks OK. I opened the 6 Torx screws and measured the continuity from a USB cable to the gold-plated connector fingers on the daughterboard, and it was OK. I suppose that the USB interface on the main board (SoC?) is broken. This unit is already out of warranty and out of production, too. I can update firmware and maps via the SD card. So, I was thinking of loading a homebrew firmware update (or hacking one of the firmware update files that I have saved) so that I could tell the unit to write its *.tcx files to the SD card. Does anyone have any pointers? This breakage was an excuse for me to buy a SonyEricsson Xperia Active. The hardware is nice (accelerometers, barometer, electronic compass, GPS accuracy comparable with the Edge, camera comparable to 10-year-old pocket camera, ANT+Sport, WLAN, GSM, 3G, you name it, water and dust proof), but it lacks a bicycle handlebar mount. One misfeature is common with the Edge 705: unpredictable reboots or shutdowns. Current uptime record is 26 hours and counting. In the 6 days I have had it, it has entered a reboot loop several times, and twice I had to move the SIM card to my old dumbphone for the rest of the day, because I did not feel like waiting for the reboot and re-entering the PIN every 5 minutes. The Android GPS software is less than nice. MyTracks could become an adequate data logging application if it gained support for the barometric altimeter, the electronic compass and the Garmin GSC-10 wheel&cadence sensor. Currently, it only records the heart rate and the GPS data. I did not find any good (open source) navigation application with offline vector maps and offline route calculation. So, it looks like it will take at least a few years before Garmin navigators and mkgmap will become obsolete. In any case, a unit with dedicated buttons should be easier to use than a touchscreen device. Marko

Add short_name / short_name:[lang] to data as need and use them if they are available and name / name:[lang] if not? I think this is not documented (and I don't remember having even checked how widely it's used, probably not very widely) but it would b logical and would make it possible to use this more generally. How to debug: IE instead of IRL

Hi, when I build a map for Ireland, the abrevision is "IE" and not the expected "IRL". The LocatorConfig.xml looks Ok to me. region contains too many nodes

I got the following attached error message (region contains too many nodes) and I don't know how to solve this problem. I have tried it with mkgmap-r2066 and mkgmap-gmap-mdr-r2135.jar but I got the same error message and a zero byte img file. Ttrying to split the file in smaller part with --max-nodes=1400000 1000000 800000 but the splitted file remains the same size. If I use --max-nodes=500000 I got two tiles but after mkgmap processing the two img tiles contain only place name nodes and nothing else. This is the problematic area: 10010059: 2324480,217088 to 2361344,262144 # : 49.877930,4.658203 to 50.668945,5.625000 http://mijndev.openstreetmap.nl/~ligfietser/mkgmap/10010059.osm.pbf The Geofabrik extract is europe.osm.pbf from today Btw I'm using remove-short-arcs, merge-lines and keep-going in my args file, if that matters.

Tags hiding roads?

Hi there everybody! I'm new to this list. Since I bought an eTrex Legend HCx, I've been making my own contributions to Open Street Map and using the free mapping from the http://garmin.openstreetmap.nl/ web site for car navigation etc. This may or may not be a -dev question but I read that because this is the only mkgmap list, anything goes. I have a problem with a stretch of road which is missing from my Garmin and causing crazy instructions i.e. turn around and find another way. Please take a look at Open Street Map here:- http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=51.44952&lon=-2.38914&zoom=16&layers=M where the first section of the road called Freezinghill Lane which heads south-westwards from the A420 is missing from the map on my Garmin. I believe this problem is caused by somebody adding a tag to the road to make it serve as a parish boundary as well as a road. Or is it confusing mkgmap with an unexpected input combination? Part of the A46 which is nearby, and joins the A420 to the M4 motorway was also missing. I caused annoyance to at least one other Open Street Map user by deleting some of these tags. The A46 now appears to be intact on the map on my Garmin. I just noticed that the Garmin mapping site has been updated again in the last couple of days, but I have to use my device to navigate to a customer in an hour or so, so I'm not going to update it at this time.
