An Observation

Firstly, thanks for the great work so far. Having been using my 605 for the past few weeks I've noticed something that was first mentioned a few weeks ago by someone else but was in the midst of a flurry of activity so I thought I'd bring it up again as I too have noticed this. When following a route if you go off course you seem to have to travel quite a way off course before the device re-calculates. I don't know whether this is related to Garmin, my 605, mkgmap or something else so thought it worth mentioning. http://openstreetmap.org/?lat=53.50969&lon=-2.31557&zoom=15&layers=B000FTF I was recently following a route on my 605 and travelling down Newhey Road to the A640 where I had to turn right at the A640 and come back to the roundabout. I ignored this route and turned right along Ladyhouse Lane instead. At the end I turned left and approached the roundabout from the opposite direction to the given route. At no point did the device recalculate such that when I arrived at the roundabout I was given the instruction to take the first exit which is obviously wrong. The "Pink Line" showed me that the first exit was not what I wanted and I could see my actual approach was different to the given approach on the live map screen but I would have expected a recalculation before this occurred. Routing Restrictions - Auto Routing with Pedestrian Gocus

1. I want to leave my PNA/Mapsource in the car setting and just have a map for carrouting and a map for outdoorsportsrouting. Setting the PNA to bicycle or pedestrian instead of car makes intelligent auto routing impossible (because road_class and speed_class will not work properly). It makes much more sense to built different maps for car navigation and for pedestrian or bicycle use and instead switching the profile just activating/deactivating a mapset. Adding highway=* {set access = yes} maxspeed=* {set maxspeed = no} will work but makes map compilation much longer. Could there be a commandline parameter like "--ignore-car-information" that will make mkgmap ignore the access and maxspeed key? In fact this would make mkgmap even faster for any kind of outdoor sport-map. 2. I was wondering about how I can make routing available on all sort of highways & routes & aerialways. By default routing doesn't seem to work on key aerialway, even if I put a road_class and road_speed to it. Simply putting this in my style-file will not produce a routable line. highway=cable_car [0x?? road_class=? road_speed=? resolution ??] Instead I have to put the following into my style file: aerialway=cable_car {set highway=cable_car} highway=cable_car [0x?? road_class=? road_speed=? resolution ??] the same goes for all kind of routes or other keys that are not highway. However mkgmap takes a long time working on the set command . Would it be possible to enable routing independantly of the key (be it highway;aerialway;waterway;railway.....]?

Tiles that crash MapSource with latest Mkgmap

I've been busy generating new Garmin tiles, but unfortunately some of the tiles cause MapSource to crash... Software used: - MapSource 6.13.7 - Mkgmap-r991 & r977 & r973 - Splitter.jar Commandline: java -Xmx2048M -jar ~/garmin/utils/mkgmap-r973/mkgmap.jar --latin1 --description='OSM world Routable' --net --route --series-name='OSM World Routable' 63240101.osm.gz I provided the max-nodes=1000000 (1 million) to the Splitter commandline to prevent too many outOfHeapSpace errors. This seemed to help because Mkgmap failed to generate a map for only three tiles for the whole of Europe, Asia, Africa and Oceania, all other tiles did not produce errors. Unfortunately, not having errors does not mean those tiles work flawlessly in MapSource: some cause it to crash instead while working fine on my GPSmap 60CSx. Some further testing showed that the tile was rendered (using the same commandline!) without causing the problems using Mkgmap-r830. The only workaround I can think about is to cut those tiles in half and try again... It would be nice to know the source of this problem and how to avoid it and also have Mkgmap to indicate clearly if there is a problem.

The problem is that this code sets the name to the default_name if undefined, but it doesn't look at the OSM name tag. It can be removed because the setting of the name is done in postConvertRules() one line below anyway (and there it's done correctly). - Thilo Hannemann
