Fwd: resolution and zoom levels in style files

Hi, I'm forwarding this mail that ended up at the bounce address rather than going to the list. -------- Original Message -------- Subject: resolution and zoom levels in style files Date: Thu, 25 Feb 2010 03:43:52 +0100 From: Daniela Duerbeck <daniela.duerbeck@gmx.de> Reply-To: daniela.duerbeck@gmx.de Organisation: GMX To: mkgmap-dev-bounces@lists.mkgmap.org.uk Hi All! In the instructions to styles I find that there are 24 zoom levels and 24 is the "most zoomed in". But when I count, I find 27 zoom levels on my Etrex Legend HCx. 27: 5m, 26: 8m, 25: 12m, 24: 20m, 23: 30m, 22: 50m, 21: 80m, 20: 120m, 19: 200m, 18: 300m, 17: 500m, 16: 800m, 15: 1.2km, 14: 2km, 13: 3km, 12: 5km, 11: 8km, 10: 12km, 9: 20km, 8: 30km, 7: 50km, 6: 80km, 5: 120km, 4: 200km, 3: 300km, 2: 500km, 1:800km. Now I would like to know which resolution I should use to make e.g. residential roads appear just at 300 meters. At 500 meters the map gets a bit confusing with all these little streets. At resolution 23 they appear at 120m, with 22 already at 500m. Are there other points to change? Apologies for this beginner's question, but I found no answer. :-( Thanks a lot in advance, Dani

a) you have to set levels via mkgmap-options or us a resolution file, else 23 is mapped to 24 only. Mind that max 7 levels can be used for a single map. Trial and Error will help you.
Are there other points to change?
Apologies for this beginner's question, but I found no answer. :-(
Thanks a lot in advance, Dani

I think there are a few problems for a beginner like me: I have 27 zoom levels on my Garmin device. I have 24 levels for resolution in the style file I have 8 mappings of resolution to levels in the options file. I learned that some levels on the device show "overzoom" so that they are not to be counted. And, not to forget the option on the device: show more or less details. That makes everything a bit confusing, even if the resolutions in the options file match exactly them inside the other files. :-))) Dani

gpsmapedit gives approximate equivalents that work with default detail levels. For example in one of my maps I have Level0=24 bits, which is equal to a grid of 2.4m, a GPS zoom level of 120m or a MapSource Zoom of under 1.2km. Bits - grid - GPS-MapSource 24 bits - 2.4m - 120m - <1.2km 22bits - 9.5m - 500m - 1.2 to 3km 20bits - 38m - 2km - 3 to 8 km 18bits - 153m - 5 to 8 km - 8 to 12 km 16bits - 610m - 20 to 30 km - 12 to 30km 15bits - 1.22km - 50 km - 50 -100km Garvan
