Hi I was meaning to write a message about this for a while and since the thread for drive-on-left/right has brought this up already today and since it is a mkgmap birthday (8 years!) this might be a good time to set the ball rolling. Currently we use rectangular tiles, but it is perfectly possible to have arbitrarily shaped tiles - in particular tiles can be shaped to exactly follow a country border or be conveniently split by straight lines between countries separated by sea. This means that every rule could be customised for each country. This is probably the biggest feature that we don't have that we can achieve with what we know about the format. I am sure that it can be done, but it is a large task and will need more than one person working on it. If there is any interest I shall outline my thoughts tomorrow. ..Steve

Happy Birthday mkgmap! And a big thanks to all developer who made this possible, mkgmap and the OSM maps for GARMIN are really a big plus for me.

I would be very interested in this. Thorsten -- Thorsten Kukuk, Senior Architect SLES & Common Code Base SUSE LINUX GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, 90409 Nuernberg, Germany GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 21284 (AG Nürnberg)

+1. While I have gone a little inactive, mkgmap is still useful. The USB data transfers on my Edge 705 died some years ago, so I cannot use it for mapping. (But I do not update OSM that much either, given that it already is good enough for me.) I have been using OsmAnd on a smartphone. In some ways, the old Garmin is still better.

Me too. It would be nice to have properly shaped polygon around the map of Finland that I still update every now and then. Marko

Amen to that! I use them daily, and everyone around is jealous of how complete and up-to-date they are. I have a built-in satnav in my car, but EUR250 for one update a year (two if you're lucky/rich) ain't gonna happen.

Happy Birthday from me as well! It is great fun to develop it further.

Yes, please do it. Gerd
