Hi! When I select in my Garmin device: Find -> Shopping -> (Menu) Select Category, I get a list of categories. At the end of the list I have currently 9 times "other". But each "other" category summarizes just one sort of shops (modulo tagging errors). Is there a possibility to change the "other" into something more meaningful? TIA, Dani

(Selfcomment) This behaviour is well documented, e.g. here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/POI_Types But can it be changed? Garmin sorts the shops correctly, so if it were possible to change the "other"s into the correct names it would be great! :-) Dani

I believe that the names of the POI submenus can be overridden with the TYP file. I have not tried it myself yet. I would really want to have open-source TYP file translation before getting into that. Marko

The categories name is part of the gps firmware and part of mapsource software. Theres no way to deal with via type-files. The only way would be to hack the gps firmware and replace the name. May be the new oregon/dakota etc. models which have a language file can be more easier manipulated in these part. But anyway the way how the objects are classified in the given categories is fixed in the firmware/software. cheers Gert

But the number of "others" seems to be correlated to the points file inside the styles folder and the typ file. For each icon with shop (type=2e) I get a separate others list. So finding is not as comfortable as it could be but much more comfortable than with original Garmin maps. One has just to keep in mind on which position which category can be found. :-))) And this depends on the subtype number. So it is no bad idea to create many different icons (i.e. subtypes) in the typ-file.

In the TYP file, you can define default names for POIs that lack a name. Have you tried defining that? Does it only affect the map display (when you move the cursor over the icon), or does it also control what is displayed in the POI menu? I would have expected the latter, but I have not tried it. yes and no, the replacement name is shown also as name if you enter the POI (and may be also saved if you save the POI as Waypoint. I have not tested it.)( In addtion to it during opening a single POI by pressing ENTER this name will also be displayed for some seconds in the status bar. Thats almosts(for some types not) the case even the POI has already a name)
, or does it also control whatis displayed in the POI menu?
No. I have had a look into a map (openmtbmap de), and as far as i can see, only non-standard poi-types creates these multiple "other" categories. With non-standard i don't mean these extended-type(or 3-Byte types). Non-standard means types which are e.g. not part of the standard-typeset of GPSmapedit or cgpsmapper. e.g for shopping it is: 0x2E01 Department Store 0x2E02 Grocery 0x2E03 General Merchandiser 0x2E04 Shopping Center 0x2E05 Pharmacy 0x2E06 Convenience 0x2E07 Apparel 0x2E08 House and Garden 0x2E09 Home Furnishing 0x2E0a Special Retail 0x2E0b Computer/Software Types like 0x2e1f creates one "other" entry in the categories submenu. The replacement text "sporting goods" from the type-file will only be shown for seconds in the status bar if you press enter for opening the POI. I have to mention, that i only have a 60csx to look at it so it may be different on other gps like oregon etc. Gert

That is the same behaviour as in my Etrex Legend HCx. But I can sort the shops this way. In the fírst "other" list all shops are summarized, that do not belong to a later category. So it is not that bad. As I said earlier, one has just to keep in mind which number one has given to a new category. Viele Grüße von Dani
