What way to create basic address and POI search in map created with mkgmap? OSM data have tag in addr:* shema (http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Key:addr), map created with --make-poi- index and --index, but search in garmin not work. -- wbr, Maks

Which Garmin? The Edge 705, GPSMap 60CSx and possibly many older models do not need either option. As far as I understand, the mkgmap --index option produces "half-cooked" files that must be transferred by MapSource to the device. Once that is done, the search should work. Others can hopefully chime in; I have never used MapSource. Best regards, Marko

Same situation for me. I have never tried, but am in the opinion it should work this way. Can anyone confirm this? If so, it should be possible to find the differences in mkgmap and mapsource generated indexes. Regards, Johann

I can confirm this: after transferring maps to my eTrex with either Mapsource on Windows/Wine or MapInstall on the Mac, address search works -- at least with the known limitations of mkgmap's index generation. I have not recently attempted to copy a generated gmapsupp.img file to my device, but I recall that the address index did not work in this case. I assume that this has not changed. Cheers.

I can confirm that copying gmapsupp.img to a Nuvi 255 results in not working adresses with a recent mkgmap. It cannot find any number in the street, even for streets which do have streetnumbers in them. Regards, Rutger.

Like Felix writes at http://openmtbmap.org/about-2/howto-search-addresses/ the address search does work on older devices, even on the gmapsupp.img generated by mkgmap without --index (and without fixing the file by MapSource). On my Edge 705, I can search for streets up to some 150km away. It could be that the street has to be in the same map tile, so that it can be found. Street numbers do not appear to have any effect on the Edge 705; it'll always return a point about halfway to the street, no matter what I type and which street numbers have been defined. Street numbers (addr:housenumber) are visible when I choose to see POI details, e.g., some shop or bus stop. Marko

I was not able to handle mkgmap-crated gmapsupp.img with Mapsource... I'm certain that it is simple as all the rest, but I can't see the evidence... Many thanks for some hints...! -- Sincerely Hendrik Oesterlin - email hendrikmail2002@yahoo.de

MapSource will not read gmapsupp.img files. Instead you have to install a mapset with individual .img, .tbd, etc., files. You can find more here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap/help/mapsource Cheers.

I have just tried to generate a mapset with mkgmap. I set the options --index --route beside others and get the *.img files, a tdb file, a mdx file and a *_mdr.img which contains the index. So far so good. But if I registry this mapset with mapsource, then I only can see the map. Searching for adresses does not work, because the menu item is grayed out. Is this a expected behaviour or did I something wrong? I have not tried to transfer the maps to my etrex, because the first step did not work. Should I give it a try? Regards, Johann

Thanks for the hint. I set the registry keys by hand and forgot the idx and mdr keys. After adding it, address search works fine in mapsource. After transferring the maps to the etrex, it works partially. If try to enter an adress, I have to enter it in the order housenumber, street, city. No country, maybe because my map contains only one country. Entering a street does only work, if I enter a number before. Then street search seems to work very ok. When I try to enter a city, I see a list of probably all cities. But with the entering the first character, no matter which one, the list gets empty. I have a week remembering that on this list some time ago there was some findings with the ordering of the input fields. Was this issue solved or is it expected not to work? Regards, Johann Gail
