openstreetmap not accepted by Garmin eTrex Venture Cx

Hi, just a newbie question: I have an older Garmin eTrex Venture Cx with older Garmin City Maps. Now I tried to fill the device with openstreetmaps and downloaded the daily build of the german map, uncompressed it and copied to the Garmin directory of a fresh 2GB flash card and put it into the device. Doesn't work. When turning the device on, at the bottom of the welcome screen a progress bar appears, goes up to 33%, then the device goes into the normal mode, but without providing the openstreetmap or listing it in the selection screen. After upgrading the firmware from 2.80 to 3.40, the only difference is that the progress bar now reaches the 67%. As far as I know, the daily build is made with mkgmap. Is that a known problem? regards Hadmut

Hi Hadmut, Could you perhaps let us know which daily build of the German map you downloaded? (From what site, etc.) Cheers.

Ah, sorry, I thought that this was commonly known. It was taken from http://dev.openstreetmap.de/aio/germany/gmapsupp.img.bz2 and there's a discussion on http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=4200 where someone else had exactly the same problem some time ago (unfortunately parts of the discussion were held in german). regards Hadmut

OK, this is the "All in one" map. If I recall correctly this map uses a TYP file to display OSM items which cannot be displayed on a regular Garmin map. Have you tried some of the other maps, to see if they work on your unit? For example, Lambertus's maps at http://garmin.na1400.info/routable.php seem quite popular.
and there's a discussion on
I trust that you did check, as the last comment in the discussion suggests, that you properly de-compressed the .bz2 file? ;-) Cheers.

Well, yeah. I am a newbie with openstreetmap, but on the other hand I started as a Unix admin about 20 years ago and have seen file compression before... :-)

Yup, these maps work. :-) regards Hadmut

AIO should too. I have no problems on a Vista Cx, Firmware 3.40, 8 GByte microSD Card and the 20091205 version of the german AIO map. Should still be available at: http://dev.openstreetmap.de/aio/germany/ As you seem to be on Unix: Put the eTrex into Mass Storage Mode, mount the eTrex (automatically mounts to /media/disk here (vfat)), then copy: bunzip2 gmapsupp.img.bz2 cp gmapsupp.img /media/disk/Garmin/gmapsupp.img (.. wait for about 20 minutes .., unmount) Casing of the upper/lowercase filenames matters. Greetings, Frieder PS: avoid eTrex Firmware version 3.30 for mapping purposes. Sticks to road although told not to.
