creating a mapsource installer

Hi, Please provide tips and tricks in creating a garmin mapsource installer without the cgpmapper. I want it exclusively on opensource. Has anyone did this? -- cheers, maning ------------------------------------------------------ "Freedom is still the most radical idea of all" -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ ------------------------------------------------------

Please provide tips and tricks in creating a garmin mapsource installer without the cgpmapper. I want it exclusively on opensource. Has anyone did this?
Which bit of the process is it that you're stuck on? I'm guessing that you may have used mkgmap to create one or more .IMG files and are looking for a way to wrap them together into a "gmapsupp.img" and send it to the device? If so, then I probably can't help as I've always cheated and used the free (as in beer but not speech) "sendmap20" on MS Windows from cGPSmapper to bundle .img files together and send them. Also, what Garmin model are you interested in loading the resulting map on? Of the handheld GPSs, some have memory cards, some don't, and some are USB accessible and some aren't. If you've got one with a memory card in it and turn the USB interface on on the device you should be able to access the "Garmin" directory as a bit of mass storage as per: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Mass_Storage_Mode At the risk of stating the bleeding obvious there are also various suggestions here: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/index.php/Mkgmap and it, and its talk page, get updated pretty regularly for new Mkgmap features etc.

A bit of background, I make Garmin maps for the Philippines and distribute them free as a way to popularize OSM and hopefully recruit more Filipino mappers. The usual request for potential users is a mapsource installer many of them wouldn't bother tinkering with anything other than double-click exe and upload the map from mapsource. Personally, I don't use mapsource (OSM have better tools ;)) see response below: On Thu, Feb 12, 2009 at 9:38 PM, Someoneelse <lists@mail.atownsend.org.uk> wrote:

This is what I do for the mapsource installer in the past. But I'm having problems lately. The map is installed in Mapsource, but some users reported they can't upload it in the device.
Also, what Garmin model are you interested in loading the resulting map on? Mostly nuvis and etrexes

Ah, OK. I did have a go at getting OSM maps visible within the Mapsource software that came with it a few months ago, but didn't succeed. I didn't try too hard as it was only ever a means to an end (getting the map on the GPS). So unfortunately (other than editing POIs) I don't really use it either. I suppose that one reason why some people may want to is to merge OSM maps on the device with previous Garmin ones that they've paid for? For what it's worth, the "load supplementary maps into Mapsource" instructions that I was trying to follow that didn't work for me were here: http://www.smc.org.uk/ContourMaps.htm A quick Google for "mapsource gmapsupp" also finds a few possibilities, including this: http://garmin.na1400.info/ http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=324&p=1 it might be worth talking to them - the page says "Done: Generate downloads for use in Garmin MapSource by providing an installer."

Hi, maning, Actually i know 2 ways to do it, but both use cgpsmapper(freeversion). Way 1: -Use ezMS V103 (http://www.malfreemaps.com/viewtopic.php?f=23&t=909) to install the mapset in Mapsource . cgpsmapper is delivered together with ezMS -use Innosetup(http://www.jrsoftware.org/isdl.php) for creation of the installer Way 2: -create a gmapsupp.img(however you want) gmaptool also can create a gmapsupp.img -Use gmaptool (http://www.anpo.republika.pl/download.html#gmaptool)=> use Function SPLIT of gmaptool - "create-files for mapsource)=> as result you get all files for installing the mapset to mapsource. Maybe you have to set your pathes in the install.bat you get from gmaptool gmaptool requieres also free version of cgpsmapper - Use Innosetup for creation of the installer Innosetup: there is also a GUI, called ISTool(http://www.jrsoftware.org/is3rdparty.php) available Also you can take another Tool for creation of the installer if you prefer. cheers Gert

You might want to ask Lambertus who runs the OSM forum. Probably best to write to the Garmin map specific forum http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewforum.php?id=26 He creates installers for the map sets, see: http://garmin.na1400.info/ The installer links are Windows executables that install with a double click. I don't know if his method uses all open-source tools though. To create your own installer you could consider using WiX [http://wix.sourceforge.net/] It would be good if we could make mkgmap create the needed XML file that could then be fed into WiX. ..Steve

I noticed by running one of the installers that it is the nullsoft installer [http://nsis.sourceforge.net]. This is also open source. It looks quite good as you are able to generate windows installers on linux with it. ..Steve

Thanks for all the tips! I will try them and report which one is best for my purpose. On Sun, Feb 15, 2009 at 5:51 AM, Steve Ratcliffe <steve@parabola.demon.co.uk> wrote:

Some of the available Garmin maps[1] provide a .bat installer, perhaps you can try out if that's user-friendly enough for your needs? I also produce a Garmin map export using mkgmap and it would be nice to bundle them up in some idiot-proof way for Windows users without using proprietary software. http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/Download
