I can build routable maps for my Garmin. However, I can search for any street names. ie: I can navigate to an intersection and say "go-to" no problem. But clicking on the find -> address. Nothing comes up. I'm trying to determine if this is a problem with mkgmap or the source OSM data. Can mkgmap handle the searching of names? and if so what data is required on the OSM side to make it work? Mikey

Mikey, this is a long outstanding problem of mkgmap. We don't know the exact file format of the garmin maps. Some parts of this format have been reverse engineered but the address search is not yet working reliably. We need some ideas what mkgmap is doing wrong here, so if you are interested in reverse engineering of an unknown file format have fun and start now :-) mkgmap developers decided to disable address search by default unless it is working reliably. I don't know if it is possible to generate an gmapsupp.img containing address search. But you can add the --index parameter to mkgmap so that the relevant .MDR and .MDX files are generated. These files can be used by MapSource's address search. To anyone: Please correct me if I am wrong :-) Have fun! WanMil

On some units address search seems to work if --index is used. I think I can recall someone reporting successful address search, And I've seen my own maps address search working on an e-trex, But that was long ago when I knew someone with an e-trex willing to try my map;) On my Nuvi 200W and Garmin mobile XT it does not work. In such cases the option --road-name-pois provides a workaround that enables searching for road names under points of interest. I rely on this heavily, because a router that does not allow street search is very ..ehh akward? ..rather useless? .. has limited use. It will be nice to here from other users which units have successful address search and which have not. This e-mail is subject to the Sappi E-Mail Legal Notice available at www.sappi.com. Neither Garmin Nüvi 205 or Etrex Legend HCx is stable searching address - sometimes it works but most times it does not. 2010/7/14 Du Plessis, Bennie <Bennie.DuPlessis@sappi.com>

My GPSMap 76CSx will find a road (or multiple roads if they have the same name) and list the cities they are in, as long as I fill in a street number (I just use number 1). Some weird things happen, though. For instance if I search for streets beginning with S, I get two listings*: S S?? If I click on the S option, it takes me to a road called Sadaf If I click on the S?? option, it takes me to a road called Sayadan I compile maps with the --name-tag-list: name:en, int_name, name switch *This is in a map covering the GCC countries of the Middle East -- Charlie

This used to work on my etrex vista hcx, too(finding streets in address search and intersections). But now I can't find any streets just places using these functions... I don't know when it worked the last time. -Martin

It works for me (Edge 705) as long as I remember. My only problem is that the house number is ignored and a point, apparently at half-way the street, is returned.

Have you tried splitting the tiles further? In my experience, mkgmap does not always flag errors when exceeding some Garmin limits, and you can end up with all sorts of breakage (including routing errors in some areas) when you generate too large tiles. The OSM data set has a tendency to grow. A year ago, 2 or 3 tiles of Finland was enough. Now I am splitting it to 6 tiles. Marko

...just found the Problem: My build Process (for a multi-layer map) includes setting the main layer (roads, POI) to transparent using gmt.exe because mkgmap somehow doesn't manage to make this singe layer transparent. gmt.exe seems to kill the road-searching information in this layer's gmapsupp.img. When I then compile all gmapsupp.img files into one with mkgmap, its not included... Did someone else also experience this transparency problem? Maybe we'll have some more elegant way of creating multi-layered maps with mkgmap at some point in the future. -Martin

Not me. See my script osm2img.sh at http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/. I am creating three layers: the basic map, and "transport" for public transportation routes and "control" for speed bumps and the like.

My only complaint in that area is that I would like to create all layers from the same tiles at once (parsing the *.osm.gz file only once). Marko
