Is it possible to change the license info which is embedded in the IMG header? Now it reads "OSM Street map http://www.openstreetmap.org/ Map data licenced under Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike 2.0 http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0/", but this is not correct when making maps from other data sources. For example contour line layers made of SRTM data do not contain any OSM data.

The text is harcoded in the method OsmMapDataSource.copyrightMessages(). You need to patch it and build a local mkgmap to get a proper attribution. Would be nice to have this as a parameter, through. bye Nop -- View this message in context: http://gis.638310.n2.nabble.com/License-text-tp6092865p6093030.html Sent from the Mkgmap Development mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Indeed, I've always considered "OSM Street Map" suboptimal. Even for the hard-coded string it would probably be better to change it to "OpenStreetMap". More correct and the exact same length. Dermot -- -------------------------------------- Igaühel on siin oma laul ja ma oma ei leiagi üles

The last time I had to program in Java is now 15 years ago, and I still don't like it. C is so much easier, that's while all important projects like linux kernel and glibc are written in it ;) I started with a patch to set the copyright message which is shown during boot of my garmin devices and in the info menu. By the way, I found out that every string will get a (c) prefix, so the current two liner "OpenStreetMap.org contributors. See: http://wiki.openstreetmap. org/index.php/Attribution" looks curious with that. As next I would look at the above license text. Is this text somewhere shown? I couldn't find any place, even if you can find it in the image. Between, what would be a good wording for the SRTM data? My current patch is attached. I am a long time C programmer, but I've always thought that java is a rather good C-like language. Much better than C++ anyway.

As well as being placed into the .img, all copyright messages are collected, de-duplicated and placed into the .tdb file. You can display all those copyright information in mapsource via help->about->product info. The tdb file is not in the gmapsupp.img file though, so the boot up message can only come from one of the .img files, probably the first? Not certain what exactly it uses. Really the .osm and .pbf files should contain the copyright information, (like .mp file do), and I do hope this happens before the switch to the odbl. So I'd like to apply your patch but change the option wording to 'specify a copyright message for files that do not contain one' or something like that. ..Steve

Java might not be that bad, as long as you work on i586 and x86_64 and a popular OS, but ever tried to run a Java 1.6 apps on ia64 with 512 CPUs and tons of GB of memory?

The patch was only a first proof of concept. If it is already ok, fine with me. But yes, the description of the options needs to be changed. But this is only if you use the SRTM data from cigar, if you use the one from the NASA directly the information is here: http://eros.usgs.gov/#/About_Us/Customer_Service/Data_Citation Thorsten -- Thorsten Kukuk, Project Manager/Release Manager SLES SUSE LINUX Products GmbH, Maxfeldstr. 5, D-90409 Nuernberg GF: Jeff Hawn, Jennifer Guild, Felix Imendörffer, HRB 16746 (AG Nürnberg)

Doesn't work for me, at least with MapSource 6.15.7. Only the MapSource copyright is shown, but not the ones of an installed map.

Attached is the new patch from me, which is able to change both: the copyright message for the device and what I call "license text". The first one works fine with my Garmin devices. Since my Mapsource version doesn't display the license text, I'm not really able to test that part. But by looking at the images with a hex editor, it looks good, the new text ist there. Oh, in later MapSource versions it has moved to Utilities->Manage Map Products.

If you have a gmapsupp.img with 2 tiles with different copyrights, what gets shown on the device? ..Steve

Ah, thanks, somehow missed it there. Ok, at least mapsource 6.15.7 is sorting the lines alphabetical. Which means even the original mkgmap text is reodered. Looks funny and of course the text in reodered form doesn't make sense anymore :( And empty lines are not allowed. Else it works as expected.

On the device, both are shown. In mapsource: didn't tested it yeet. But my expectation is: mapsource will get all lines, sort them alphabetical and show the unique ones. Hi, ok, here is my last and final patch for the copyright/license informations in MapSource/Basecamp/Garmin Device. Works now for me in all cases I can test. Thanks, now committed. There is also the licence file that gets included in the windows installer, which should also be changed. ..Steve

Just a hint: The option "--license-file=file" only works as command line option. It doesn't work if it's part of a configuration file.
