As this has now been merged to trunk I thought I'd have a look as I've never properly tried to use it before. I'm sure that I'm missing something as having compiled a map with the --road-name-pois option I don't see anywhere I can search for road names. I downloaded great_britain.osm and compiled the latest mkgmap from subversion and did the following java -jar splitter.jar --mapid=70000001 --max-nodes=1000000 great_britain.osm java -Xmx2048M -jar mkgmap.jar --latin1 --gmapsupp --route --net --code-page=1252 --country-name="UNITED KINGDOM" --country-abbr=UK --tdbfile --tdb-v4 --road-name-pois --description="Map of GB" 70 0000??.osm On my 605 to search for anything I select the options Where to? | Find places. I'm then presented with a list of Favourites, Cities, Food & Drink, Gas Station, Lodging, Attractions, Transportation, Shopping, Bank & ATM, Entertainment, Recreation, Community, Hospital, Auto Services Some of these also have sub-sections but I can't see where road names are. I thought that using the --road-name-pois option would add an extra option into this list but I may well be mistaken. Items listed under the above categories are being read from the mkgmap created map as things I have added are present when they weren't previously Where am I going wrong? Cheers Paul

Well, with the original road name pois code they used to appear under a category called "geographic points" or similar. With the introduction of the new all-singing, all-dancing POI address stuff, they seem to have disappeared. Perhaps Bernhard knows where they have gone? Cheers, Mark

I think it really depends on the garmin device how it handles the road pois. On my Nuvi 360 I never found a special category for the road pois. The only way to use them is to do a search over all pois. I'm pretty sure that my changes didn't change anything in that area. I personally always use --road-name-pois=0x2900 for my maps because the default value 0x640a lack support for address information. Thanks Berni.

Unfortunately on the 605 there is no way of searching all POIs, you can only search all POIs within categories so I'm guessing that unless there's a way of assigning the POIs to a category that this won't work for me. Cheers Paul

I haven't had time to look into this but I have a hunch that it's something to do with whether a region is defined or not. I'm only saying this because if I generate a map with the latest version and it has a country defined but not a region, the RNP are visible under geographic points. But if I define a region also, the RNP don't show up anymore. Like I said, I haven't had time to look into this much, the above observation may actually not be true - perhaps someone could test that hypothesis? Also, I think this behaviour is not related to the new POI code, I think it has always been like that and no-one had noticed before? Cheers, Mark

I can't find anywhere in the Find menu that lists road names or addresses when I make a map * without --road-name-pois * with --road-name-pois * with --road-name-pois=0x2900 This is on a Garmin 60CSx. The map I'm generating can be downloaded here: http://osm.nix.is/latest/default/gmapsupp.img

Hi,
I can't find anywhere in the Find menu that lists road names or addresses when I make a map
* without --road-name-pois * with --road-name-pois * with --road-name-pois=0x2900
This is on a Garmin 60CSx.
The map I'm generating can be downloaded here:
That map doesn't contain any labels that look like the RNP labels. Also, it doesn't appear to contain any points with type 0x2900 or even type 0x640a (the default type for RNP). Cheers, Mark

No it doesn't, I'm not rendering it with --road-name-pois anymore since I couldn't get it to work. It's made with "--mapname=$mapname --description="$description" --latin1 --tdbfile --country-name=$name --country-abbr=$abbr --gmapsupp --route --net" options at the moment.

Why don't you generate a map with the --road-name-pois option and then I could take a look and see if it's as expected? Cheers, Mark

Oh sorry about that, brainfart:) I should have given you a link to a file that was actually useful to you! Here's one made with: wget "http://api.openstreetmap.org/api/0.5/map?bbox=-22.093,64.025,-21.594,64.203" -O reykjavik.osm java -jar ~/src/mkgmap/dist/mkgmap.jar --road-name-pois --description="OSM Reykjavik" --latin1 --gmapsupp --route --net reykjavik.osm with revision 975 of mkgmap (trunk): http://u.nix.is/gmapsupp.img I just tried loading that map and I can't find anywhere in the Find menu where I can search for streetnames (as before).

That map does contain points with code 0x640a and sensible looking labels. I loaded it onto my etrex, the RNP show up under "Geographic points" and "all POI". Does your GPS have an option to search for all POI near the current postion? If so, they should show up as entries of the form ROADNAME/CITYNAME, where CITYNAME should be the nearest city/town/hamlet to the road. Cheers, Mark

As you've confirmed that this map DOES contain the relevant info I tried it on my 605 and still no joy. I'm quite happy to accept that it's my device that does something different (probably the 705 as well) as opposed to an error but thought I'd add to the knowledgebase anyway. Cheers Paul

Err, you did remember to change the search reference to where the map is, didn't you? Cheers, Mark

Err, what search reference? As I said earlier, on the 605 to find anything you choose the menu options Where to? | Find places. I'm then presented with a list of Favourites, Cities, Food & Drink, Gas Station, Lodging, Attractions, Transportation, Shopping, Bank & ATM, Entertainment, Recreation, Community, Hospital, Auto Services. I removed the basemap and looking through the above categories some of the subcategories that are on my normal map were missing which suggests that it was reading these correctly from the downloaded map but other that that I don't know what to say. I've looked through everything on the Settings menu and can't find anything relevant. Cheers Paul

Err, what search reference?
Well, on the etrex, when you do, say, find city, it will show you a list of cities and you can then press menu again to get a menu that allows you to search by name, etc. One of the options is "change reference". That lets you move the cursor to the point on the map you want the search to start from. Very useful if you are based in the UK but you want to check street names in Iceland! Most of the categories support that menu option. Cheers, Mark

Ahhhhhhhhh. None on my categories support that. Pressing Menu takes you to the root menu, mode takes you back a menu level and ok takes you to an option to spell the name you're looking for. None of the other buttons do anything. I'm going to do some experiments with maps from different countries to make sure that I can search these in the normal way (for my 605) just in case I'm mistaking this with an inability to search anywhere outside UK. I have previously been to France with my GPS and the map worked fine but all I did was follow pre-plotted routes or record where I was. I didn't try routing or searching. Cheers Paul

Yes, sorry, this much does work, see: http://www.flickr.com/photos/avarab/3350284668/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/avarab/3350284696/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/avarab/3350284728/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/avarab/3349455383/ I meant that I can't *search* for addresses, garmin devices have a feature to search for address substrings if the map supports it. This is what taxi drivers do when they use the Navi for example, this is documented e.g. on page 22 in the 60CSx manual: PDF: http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/GPSMAP60CSx_OwnersManual.pdf Online copy: http://www.scribd.com/doc/8552192/Garmin-60CSX-Portable-GPS-Manual I've misunderstood what the --road-name-pois feature did. I thought the Garmin device automatically implemented address search if the roads had the correct metadata (POIs), but that seems not to be the case. This feature as-is is pretty useless for what Address search would be used for, there you want to explicitly search for things that aren't nearby (across the whole map). And even if you're looking for nearby things a substring search is better than having to page through a list. But thanks for your efforts in getting this much to work at least.

Well, it was never meant to be more than a quick hack to be able to display/find road names in your locality until somebody worked out how to do the job properly. Cheap and cheerful. On the etrex, you can search the RNP's for a substring so you don't have to page through the list.
But thanks for your efforts in getting this much to work at least.
It was nothing. Cheers, Mark

On my eTrex Legend with my map created with r963 I can find the roads under "All POI" and "Geographic Points". Does the 605 not have these categories? These Garmin Edge devices seem to be a little different in some respects.
