Those empty tiles are not there when compiling the map with mkgmap r2012 but it is noticed on versions after 2042. Any ideas?

i know the problem from mapsource (see here: www.geocaching-dresden.de/missing_tiles.jpg), and to a lesser extend from an oregon 450 (zooming in and out usally fixes it here). it seems to be a problem connected to a certain range of pois. as soon as i zoom out far enough for pois to vanish, the problem is gone. i suspect about anything between 0x3300 and 0x3f00, but haven't had time to test some more. but: it seems more complex than just leaving out this range of pois - more often than not they are displayed correctly. all in all: it feels like a garmin and not an mkgmap problem. Hi Minko, I have had a look at the changes between r2012 and r2042. The only change that looks suspect to be able to produce holes is r2028 which performs a little change in the subdivision creation. So I created a mkgmap r2052 with reverting r2028: http://files.mkgmap.org.uk/detail/38. Can you (and maybe also pepole reporting the problem on the OSM forum) try that and report if the holes disappear? When using this mkgmap do you have subdivison errors in the logfile? WanMil

Thanks Wanmil, I will forward your message to the topic on http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=14140 because I have never noticed those issues myself. Maybe the guys who reported this can test it out.

Thanks Wanmil, your patch seems to do the trick: Yggdrasil wrote: Well done! Are you very sure that it is really fixed by patching mkgmap? I have some times missing tiles in my nuvi 755 and deleting all log files and making a defragementation of the files on the Garmin unit, especially the .img seems to help. -- Sincerely Hendrik Oesterlin - email hendrikmail2002@yahoo.de

Hendrik, I'm not sure if those problems are all the same, maybe there are other issues causing the same effects. I have put a test map with the patched version online and let it test on the Dutch forum. Maybe the poster 'Januitsneek' who had problems with his nuvi is helped with the patch, maybe not. I dont know if messing around with defragmentation of the nuvis internal disk is recommended, it might give problems with the warranty? Maybe compiling a map with the reverted commit of r2028 exhausts the maximum size of a subdivision in the special cases. The real limits of a subdivision are not well known so the problem that a subdivision is exceeded can still occur with and without r2028. It would be very interesting to get the exact mkgmap and splitter settings how the maps are created and which exact areas are missing. I'll try to get the information from the forum although this should better be discussed on this list. WanMil

Wanmil, If 'Januitsneek' has the same problems, you can probably see the missing tiles of my testmap on the screenshots of his post#5 http://forum.openstreetmap.org/viewtopic.php?id=13826 I mailed him to test the new test map.
