[PATCH] - In search of the fabled "destination only routing" bit

Hi, The other day, Bernhard said:
Has anybody played with the RoadNetwork.DELIVERY field until know ? To me it looks like this might solve the problem. If the access is totally blocked to a area the routing gets very strange. If I want to go into this area I get routed via a unpaved road which is also blocked. If I set the RoadNetwork.DELIVERY field the routing gets more useful.
I can now confirm that what used to be called RoadNetwork.DELIVERY bit is, in fact, the fabled "destination only routing" bit. If you set this bit for a road, mapsource (and presumably, the gps also) will avoid routing you through that road unless your destination is only accessible using that way. It only appears to affect the routing of cars/motorcycles - for all the other types of vehicles, it makes no difference. The attached patch activates this feature when it sees either access=destination, motorcar=destination or motorcycle=destination tags. It issues a warning for access=destination to remind the map maker that only car routing is affected. Please test the attached patch. Many thanks Bernhard for pointing me in the right direction. Cheers, Mark PS - still don't know what the other spare bit (what was called "emergency") is for.

Hi Mark, thanks for this patch. Perfect routing suggested by the Nuvi !
Please test the attached patch.
PS - still don't know what the other spare bit (what was called "emergency") is for.
My GPS provides a vehicle type "Emergency" in the route options. I think this is supposed to be used by ambulances police etc ... Thanks Berni.

Hi Bernhard,

That's great, if we get a some more +ve reports without any -ve reports I will commit that code.

Yes, but if you look back on the list for my earlier mutterings today, you will see that I discovered where the "delivery" and "emergency" bits really reside. So, we still have one spare bit (0x08) that must have some effect on the routing/access/something. I have tried setting that bit but mapsource doesn't appear to take any notice. Cheers, Mark

In the routing options on my etrex there are the following options: Type car/hgv/pedestrian/bike... Avoid - turnarounds - toll roads - highways - unpaved roads - carpool lanes As the flags for type, turnarounds, toll roads, highways should be known, the last bit could mean unpaved or carpool lanes. Have you tried this options? (By the way: 'Avoid Highways' does not work as expected on my unit, it leads to problems on inter tile routing.)

Just to repeat what I mentioned in another posting to Carlos, it appears that access=destination is only useful if the way being tagged is not just a single straight segment but part of something more complex. I don't know if it has to have multiple segments or be connected to other ways with the same tag but there is some requirement there (yet to be understood). So if you work out what the requirement is for access=destination to always be effective, please say. Cheers, Mark

Has anyone else apart from Bernhard had a chance to try out this patch? If you have, please say how you got on. Did it work as expected? Thanks, Mark
