Does your newly created map displays in basecamp correctly?
If no: The start is to find out why tiles are skipped by mkgmap or splitter by investigating the error logging (This is the tip of Ticker)
If yes: A start could be to disable all maps on your device by renaming the *.IMG extension to *._IMG except your own map.
You can find the maps on both the device as the SSD in the map garmin
If you created the maps the most straight forward way (without specifying family id and tile number start for example) you can easily create duplicate tile numbers which could conflict with other mapmakers. Default all tiles start with 6324xxx1

Note that the France OpenTopoMap on the same device is working properly.

On my device I've moved all maps in a separated directories to disable them. The only one left was mine.
To create the France map, I started from belgium-latest.osm.pbf downloaded from geofabrik.de. Then I splitted it using splitter (r597) tool and then generated the map with mkgmap (r4525). The mkgmap command line option was:

Hi Pierre, Did you make sure that there is no other map on this device which contains equal mapids? Since you use the default 63240001, 63240002 I wonder if you also created another map with one of these ids. If that is possible, make sure to use a different id simply rename the other gmapsupp files from *.img to e.g. *.img_ It is not sufficient to disable the map. Hi Gerd, I've removed all my maps except the gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img which were provided with the GPS itself. The result is better: some tiles are still missing when displaying the map at high scale BUT when I zoom in on those tiles, the map appears. Here are 2 screenshots. High scale: [image: 327.bmp] Zoom in on the missing area: [image: 338.bmp] If the problem comes from the mapid, how can I rename default 63240001, 63240002 to whatever values ? Did you make sure that there is no other map on this device which contains equal mapids? Since you use the default 63240001, 63240002 I wonder if you also created another map with one of these ids. If that is possible, make sure to use a different id simply rename the other gmapsupp files from *.img to e.g. *.img_ It is not sufficient to disable the map.

Thanks for your suggestion. But in my case, the same map of France coming from OpenTopoMap is working perfectly. So I don't think that the tiles limit has been reached.

If you created the maps the most straight forward way (without specifying family id and tile number start for example) you can easily create duplicate tile numbers which could conflict with other mapmakers. Default all tiles start with 6324xxx1

On my device I've moved all maps in a separated directories to disable them. The only one left was mine.
To create the France map, I started from belgium-latest.osm.pbf downloaded from geofabrik.de<http://geofabrik.de>. Then I splitted it using splitter (r597) tool and then generated the map with mkgmap (r4525). The mkgmap command line option was:

Hi Pierre, please don't attach more screenshots, they are the reason that mails are not forwarded immediately. The easiest way to set the mapid is the option in splitter. As long as you use only your own maps and those from Garmin you can use any id. Did you check how many tiles are contained in the open-topo map for France? Maybe John is right and the number is the limit. If you don't need a full map of France for your journey maybe use a polygon for splitter to cut the area you need. Hi, I just would like to give you some feedback against the missing tile issue. As a reminder, my Garmin device is a GPSMAP 66s. I've changed the mapid of all tiles of France map to avoid overlapping with the Belgium map I'm also using. Since this change, all tiles are displayed properly. However at large scale (120km or 80km), some tiles are still missing but I think this should be an issue with the 66s. The good news is that when I zoom in, the missing tiles appear which was not the case before. And as I'm using the scale 200m or 120m during my hiking or cycling trips, that's not a problem anymore. I've searched for a limit of tiles for a map but I didn't find one. For custom maps KMZ, it seems to be a limit of 100 tiles ( https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=1Bz6TOQfUJ65zKV2l9IYAA) but it shouldn't apply to the img map. please don't attach more screenshots, they are the reason that mails are not forwarded immediately. The easiest way to set the mapid is the option in splitter. As long as you use only your own maps and those from Garmin you can use any id. Did you check how many tiles are contained in the open-topo map for France? Maybe John is right and the number is the limit. If you don't need a full map of France for your journey maybe use a polygon for splitter to cut the area you need.

I've removed all my maps except the gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img which were provided with the GPS itself.
The result is better: some tiles are still missing when displaying the map at high scale BUT when I zoom in on those tiles, the map appears. Here are 2 screenshots.

If the problem comes from the mapid, how can I rename default 63240001, 63240002 to whatever values ? (I would like to be able to load Belgium maps with the France one).

If no: The start is to find out why tiles are skipped by mkgmap or splitter by investigating the error logging (This is the tip of Ticker) If yes: A start could be to disable all maps on your device by renaming the *.IMG extension to *._IMG except your own map. You can find the maps on both the device as the SSD in the map garmin
If you created the maps the most straight forward way (without specifying family id and tile number start for example) you can easily create duplicate tile numbers which could conflict with other mapmakers. Default all tiles start with 6324xxx1

I didn't install the map in basecamp but if it can help, I will.
On my device I've moved all maps in a separated directories to disable them. The only one left was mine.
To create the France map, I started from belgium-latest.osm.pbf downloaded from geofabrik.de<http://geofabrik.de><http://geofabrik.de>. Then I splitted it using splitter (r597) tool and then generated the map with mkgmap (r4525). The mkgmap command line option was:

Hi Pierre, It still sounds strange that there are tiles missing at certain zoomlevels if you really renamed/deleted/removed all other maps from your device. Disabling maps through the device menu’s is not enough. The full maps should be unrecognizable renamed or removed on filesystem (through windows explorer) from both the device as also the internal ssd card to be sure no other map is still interfering with your newly created tiles. If you say “ I've changed the mapid of all tiles” That sounds to me as if you did this manually or with a tool afterwords? The mapid is part of the splitter process. In order to have a clean start you should best both use splitter and mkgmap again form scratch to build your new map wit the new unique mapid=<8digits> passed to splitter. If you also install your maps in your registry or basecamp you can use javawa tool (javawa GMTK) to look for errors. https://www.javawa.nl/downloads/software/GMTK_Setup.exe To just examine your device for maps and errors java device manager can hint for problems https://www.javawa.nl/downloads/software/JDM_Setup.exe At least good to hear you can at least use it. The good news is that when I zoom in, the missing tiles appear which was not the case before. And as I'm using the scale 200m or 120m during my hiking or cycling trips, that's not a problem anymore. I've searched for a limit of tiles for a map but I didn't find one. For custom maps KMZ, it seems to be a limit of 100 tiles (https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=1Bz6TOQfUJ65zKV2l9IYAA) but it shouldn't apply to the img map. Hi Joris, When I said "I've changed the mapid of all tiles" that's by using the --mapid option of splitter. I didn't manually change anything to generated files. On my 66s, as you have suggested, I have removed all maps except the base map which was on the GPS when I bought it. The generated map was copied as-is on my GPS device and, as explained, some tiles are still missing at high zoomlevels (>= 80km). But if I put this map on my GPSMAP 64s, the problem doesn't appear and looking at the map with qmapshack shows all tiles properly. For me it looks like a 66s issue (like if some tiles are too slow to be built, they're skipped). I will try your suggestion JDM_Setup tonight. Disabling maps through the device menu’s is not enough. The full maps should be unrecognizable renamed or removed on filesystem (through windows explorer) from both the device as also the internal ssd card to be sure no other map is still interfering with your newly created tiles.
If you say “ I've changed the mapid of all tiles” That sounds to me as if you did this manually or with a tool afterwords?
The mapid is part of the splitter process. In order to have a clean start you should best both use splitter and mkgmap again form scratch to build your new map wit the new unique mapid=<8digits> passed to splitter.
If you also install your maps in your registry or basecamp you can use javawa tool (javawa GMTK) to look for errors.

I just would like to give you some feedback against the missing tile issue. As a reminder, my Garmin device is a GPSMAP 66s.
I've changed the mapid of all tiles of France map to avoid overlapping with the Belgium map I'm also using. Since this change, all tiles are displayed properly. However at large scale (120km or 80km), some tiles are still missing but I think this should be an issue with the 66s. The good news is that when I zoom in, the missing tiles appear which was not the case before. And as I'm using the scale 200m or 120m during my hiking or cycling trips, that's not a problem anymore.
I've searched for a limit of tiles for a map but I didn't find one. For custom maps KMZ, it seems to be a limit of 100 tiles ( https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=1Bz6TOQfUJ65zKV2l9IYAA) but it shouldn't apply to the img map. My France map and the OpenTopoMap of France have 120 tiles...

As long as you use only your own maps and those from Garmin you can use any id. Did you check how many tiles are contained in the open-topo map for France? Maybe John is right and the number is the limit. If you don't need a full map of France for your journey maybe use a polygon for splitter to cut the area you need.

I've removed all my maps except the gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img which were provided with the GPS itself.
The result is better: some tiles are still missing when displaying the map at high scale BUT when I zoom in on those tiles, the map appears. Here are 2 screenshots.

If you created the maps the most straight forward way (without specifying family id and tile number start for example) you can easily create duplicate tile numbers which could conflict with other mapmakers. Default all tiles start with 6324xxx1

Note that the France OpenTopoMap on the same device is working properly.

Hi Pierre, Do you used the mkgmap default style and default options-file for your test?
80km covers full Benelux, Northern France and big parts of Nordrhein Westfalen in one screen/picture on my Oregon. Pretty big area. Zoomlevels >80km should normally switch to overviewlevels I guess. Default options file already uses level 17 ~ 20km to switch to overview map And the overviewmap (as far as I know) is only 1 single map .img which I don’t think could even be displayed in separate pieces. But maybe somebody else could hang in here to be more sure.
If you think the size of the tiles has something to do with it, you could lower the max-nodes value of splitter to create more, but smaller tiles. What max-nodes did you use? I use 1.500.000 for a big single full Europe map which builds without errors. You can find the maps on both the device as the SSD in the map garmin If you created the maps the most straight forward way (without specifying family id and tile number start for example) you can easily create duplicate tile numbers which could conflict with other mapmakers. Zoomlevels >80km should normally switch to overviewlevels I guess.
Default options file already uses level 17 ~ 20km to switch to overview map
And the overviewmap (as far as I know) is only 1 single map .img which I don’t think could even be displayed in separate pieces.
But maybe somebody else could hang in here to be more sure.
If you think the size of the tiles has something to do with it, you could lower the max-nodes value of splitter to create more, but smaller tiles.
What max-nodes did you use? I use 1.500.000 for a big single full Europe map which builds without errors.

When I said "I've changed the mapid of all tiles" that's by using the --mapid option of splitter. I didn't manually change anything to generated files.
On my 66s, as you have suggested, I have removed all maps except the base map which was on the GPS when I bought it.
The generated map was copied as-is on my GPS device and, as explained, some tiles are still missing at high zoomlevels (>= 80km). But if I put this map on my GPSMAP 64s, the problem doesn't appear and looking at the map with qmapshack shows all tiles properly. For me it looks like a 66s issue (like if some tiles are too slow to be built, they're skipped).
I will try your suggestion JDM_Setup tonight.

The mapid is part of the splitter process. In order to have a clean start you should best both use splitter and mkgmap again form scratch to build your new map wit the new unique mapid=<8digits> passed to splitter.
If you also install your maps in your registry or basecamp you can use javawa tool (javawa GMTK) to look for errors.

I just would like to give you some feedback against the missing tile issue. As a reminder, my Garmin device is a GPSMAP 66s.
I've changed the mapid of all tiles of France map to avoid overlapping with the Belgium map I'm also using. Since this change, all tiles are displayed properly. However at large scale (120km or 80km), some tiles are still missing but I think this should be an issue with the 66s. The good news is that when I zoom in, the missing tiles appear which was not the case before. And as I'm using the scale 200m or 120m during my hiking or cycling trips, that's not a problem anymore.
I've searched for a limit of tiles for a map but I didn't find one. For custom maps KMZ, it seems to be a limit of 100 tiles ( https://support.garmin.com/en-CA/?faq=1Bz6TOQfUJ65zKV2l9IYAA) but it shouldn't apply to the img map. My France map and the OpenTopoMap of France have 120 tiles...

As long as you use only your own maps and those from Garmin you can use any id. Did you check how many tiles are contained in the open-topo map for France? I've removed all my maps except the gmapbmap.img and gmaptz.img which were provided with the GPS itself.
The result is better: some tiles are still missing when displaying the map at high scale BUT when I zoom in on those tiles, the map appears. Here are 2 screenshots.

I didn't install the map in basecamp but if it can help, I will.
On my device I've moved all maps in a separated directories to disable them. The only one left was mine.
To create the France map, I started from belgium-latest.osm.pbf downloaded from geofabrik.de<http://geofabrik.de><http://geofabrik.de>. Then I splitted it using splitter (r597) tool and then generated the map with mkgmap (r4525). The mkgmap command line option was:

80km covers full Benelux, Northern France and big parts of Nordrhein Westfalen in one screen/picture on my Oregon. Pretty big area. Zoomlevels >80km should normally switch to overviewlevels I guess. Default options file already uses level 17 ~ 20km to switch to overview map And the overviewmap (as far as I know) is only 1 single map .img which I don’t think could even be displayed in separate pieces. But maybe somebody else could hang in here to be more sure.
If you think the size of the tiles has something to do with it, you could lower the max-nodes value of splitter to create more, but smaller tiles. What max-nodes did you use? I use 1.500.000 for a big single full Europe map which builds without errors. I didn't manually change anything to generated files. On my 66s, as you have suggested, I have removed all maps except the base map which was on the GPS when I bought it. The generated map was copied as-is on my GPS device and, as explained, some tiles are still missing at high zoomlevels (>= 80km). But if I put this map on my GPSMAP 64s, the problem doesn't appear and looking at the map with qmapshack shows all tiles properly. For me it looks like a 66s issue (like if some tiles are too slow to be built, they're skipped). I will try your suggestion JDM_Setup tonight. Hi Possibly related. Using the default style and default zoom levels, zooming out to display the whole of the UK took an age on my old device - the amount of detail in each tile at the outermost map is vastly more that the pixels available. Leaving it for a few minutes to draw everything just results in an unreadable mess. I guess it also uses a lot of the device memory to display so many tiles at the the same time. What I now have is an extra outer level that is a bit like the overview map, just shows sea/land, some borders, motorways and trunk roads and major cities. I have this in the mystyle/options: levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18, 4:15 but command line option --levels="0:24,1:22,2:20,3:18,4:15" should override the specification in the style. Google on the map maximum size, I've found this ( https://www.garminworldmaps.com/how-to-install/garmin-card-size/): "The unit is reading from the memory card up to 4GB of map files. Is the map bigger than 4GB the unit cannot read the maps. Any further capacity on the SD card, depending on the device, can be used for other maps, pictures, MP3 files and track logs. If the map on the memory card contains more than 2025 map tiles, the device cannot read the data, even if the map size is less than 4GB." So the 2G shouldn't be a problem. I'm pretty sure that the problem is linked to the 66s. On my 64s, I've no such issue. But as I said, as all tiles are present when I zoom in, it's not a problem for me. I can live with that. One last question, is there a good documentation about the style syntax ? I would like to remove some details from my map (like the buildings but keeping housenumber) but I don't know how to do that. Using the default style and default zoom levels, zooming out to display the whole of the UK took an age on my old device - the amount of detail in each tile at the outermost map is vastly more that the pixels available. Leaving it for a few minutes to draw everything just results in an unreadable mess. I guess it also uses a lot of the device memory to display so many tiles at the the same time.
What I now have is an extra outer level that is a bit like the overview map, just shows sea/land, some borders, motorways and trunk roads and major cities.
I have this in the mystyle/options: levels = 0:24, 1:22, 2:20, 3:18, 4:15
but command line option --levels="0:24,1:22,2:20,3:18,4:15" should override the specification in the style.
Beware, adding an extra map level might make the map exceed 2G

Hallo Pierre, On the mkgmap website is a style manual https://www.mkgmap.org.uk/doc/pdf/style-manual.pdf The style is a sort of simple programming language. A style is mostly based on 4 text files containing style-rules Every element in the osm data is processed against each rule until a match is found If no match is found at the end, the element is skipped The 4 files are processed in the following order Relations Hiking routes, cycle routes and so called multipolygon’s Points Poi’s Lines Highways and other lines Polygons Area’s Best make a copy of the default style first To hide buildings you can start with commenting out the rule for buildings. Open the polygons file in notepad and you will find a line building=* & building!=no [0x13 resolution 24] It says: if building tag has any value but the building tag has not the value ‘no’, then add it to the map with id 0x13 but only visible at the most zoomed in level 24. To disable it, just at a # before the line. Housenumber search is not directly related to the building itself so still works In case you don’t know and you want to know how osm objects look like, you can go to https://www.openstreetmap.org/ right click and choose ‘Properties’ and you will see how every osm object is tagged so you can base your rules on these info Maybe this will give you a quick start, more details can be found in the style manual.
