Hi, Does anybody already has any experience with a mkgmap generated map on the brand new Garmin eTrex 20 or 30? I know these models are available for just a couple of days now, but I'm seriously considering buying a eTrex 30 any time soon. But I only buy it when the OSM based maps work on them. Maybe I can take a gmapsupp.img with me to the shop and try myself before I buy it, but if anyone already has any experience I would really like to know. Regards, Frank

To reply to my own post and to let others know, I can confirm that the OSM based OpenFietsMap works as expected on my brand new eTrex 30. Regards, Frank 2011/9/29 Frank Fesevur <ffes@users.sourceforge.net>:

Thanks - that's useful to know. Are there any obvious differences in e.g. routing support, or do the things that did and did not work before still work and not work after? Cheers, Andy

My previous gpsr was a Venture HC, so I can't say anything about the routing differences. And since I only bought it yesterday I still have much to discover about the new unit. The buttons are the same, the basic interface feels familiar, but obviously the details are different. If you have any specific question or situations to test, I can always give it a try. One *big* difference (not related to maps though) is that the GPS and GLONASS reception is the best I have seen so far. Even inside my house I get a fix. Regards, Frank

Hi Frank, I'm glad to hear this. Can you check if they improved the rendering of this kind of roads: cycleway:right = track http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=114718994 In Mapsource/Basecamp the cycleway is drawn on the right side of the road, but the modern GPS types like Oregon and Dakota draw it on the opposite (wrong) side. On the older Etrex it was displayed as expected. I reported this issue on the Garmin forum but they didn't solve it. https://forums.garmin.com/showthread.php?t=17892 Frank wrote: To reply to my own post and to let others know, I can confirm that the OSM based OpenFietsMap works as expected on my brand new eTrex 30. I have to see if I can find (or create) a situation in my neighborhood (Den Haag or Zoetermeer) to reproduce such a situation. The roundabout situation should not be too hard to find here. Or I have out how I can view that specific street on my gpsr without having to pan to it manually. Regards, Frank

Are you talking about mkgmap-generated-maps or original Garmin maps ? Chris

@chris: Mkgmap of course. Garmin doesn't know ways like cycleway:right @ Frank: Please search for Vijverlaan in Krimpen aan de IJssel, so you can also see if the address search index works

Ok, just was wondering because in the default style there is no handling for cycleway(:left/right) = track. I assume this can be easily done with overlay or continue-statement in the style. So, if I understand correct: You have a line like ================ street ................ cycleway in the TYP file and some Garmin devices show the cycleway on the right side of the street and other devices show it on the left side. Turns out that a street in my neighborhood has a similar tag: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=7489932 And the cycleways are on the wrong side of the road on my gpsr. Regards, Frank

@ Frank: guess Garmin will never learn, I think they copied the firmware from Dakota/Oregon :-( @ Chris, that is correct. Frank uses the Openfietsmap, styles can be found on my website (openfietsmap.nl)

Cool. Does the 30 support more than one map file? How does it display maps with more than one Family-ID?

At this moment, there are three gmap*.img files on my device. Two that came with the device and that one osm based (most recent openfietsmap.nl full version) that I used all day today. You can switch on and off maps as you like, so I guess (have to try this out) that mulitple osm based maps should not be a problem as long as the Family-IDs and the filenames are different. If you want to, I can try this tomorrow and let you know. Anything special you want me to try? Today I navigated with it some short distances (from geocache to geocache). As said I have no Garmin device to compare the navigation to, but this just worked. Had it on bike navigation (my mistake, we were by car) and did send me to a shortcut only available for bikes. Regards, Frank

You can have more than one Family-ID in one gmapsupp.img. I use this feature for contour line layers in my topo map: http://www.kleineisel.de/blogs/index.php/osmmap/ In my eTrex Legend HCx I can switch these layers on and off individually. Some of the newer devices can't do this AFAIK. Would be nice to know how the 30 behaves in this respect.

Ralf, If I send 3 different maps (with different FID) to the Dakota I have one gmapsupp.img on the device, and in the map selection menu you can see 3 mapsets and switch them on and off individually. So also on the newer devices you can do this (so it is very likely that it's possible on the new Etrex as well). The only thing you can't do anymore is selecting the individual tiles on and off, which was possible on the Etrex models.

From what I have read on the forum.gps.nl is that the new Etrex ignores the OSM access tags like in Basecamp. Car navigation will be routed on cycleways, ignoring bollards etc. Can you confirm this Frank? If this is the case it seems that Garmin will spread the Basecamp bug to the GPS units and in a matter of time mkgmap generated maps are worthless for navigation purpose, unless we will do something. On my Openfiets cycle maps I already anticipated on this and made all roads where you are not allowed to ride on, unaccesible by using non-routable lines or flag them as unpaved.

Since I never have needed this so I have to see if there is a way to test this without having to go somewhere. Anyone any hints where to start looking? Regards, Frank

If I power on my Edge 705 indoors away from windows, in a few minutes it will give up trying to find satellites and pop up a menu where I can pick the current location from the map. If I subsequently select demo mode, I can navigate to points around the location that I chose. I just did this today in order to prepare for a business trip abroad. Thanks to Lambertus for providing the map download service! (And thanks to the mappers, my destination looks well mapped.) There is no way I would download hundreds of megabytes of osm.pbf extract and start splitting it myself. I can barely do the 90-megabyte Finland.
Anyone any hints where to start looking?
I guess that there are some parks or pedestrian areas where cars are not allowed. Similarly, some highway=trunk could have foot=no or bicycle=no. (Garmin could treat highway=motorway specially even with this new breakage, and keep forbidding bicycles and pedestrians from them. You could check that as well.) Best regards, Marko
