Map installation problem from r1971 onward

Hi, I downloaded ireland.osm.pbf, split it with the current (r171) splitter into two tiles. I compiled these with mkgmap, using --index etc, for address search. All appears to go fine and I can open the map in Basecamp on a Mac. But, as soon as I try to transfer the files to my Garmin unit with Mapinstall, I get an error asking me to make sure my unit is switched on and connected. This problem only started from r1971 (revisions 1970 and earlier are fine). There is no problem if just one map tile is transferred, even in the current revision of mkgmap - the problem is for multiple map tiles. Thanks, Cliff.

Hey Cliff, I've no problem to transfer the map. I've used mkgmap r2008 and the latest splitter-version. Have you also tried to send the map to an usb-stick. Which Garmin do you use. How to you install the map on your Mac?! I never had your error on my Mac, also using older versions. Cheers, Martin Am 26.07.2011 um 17:00 schrieb Clifford Nolan:

Hi Martin, I don't know whether this is correct or not but it worked … I downloaded and unzipped a file called europe from http://www.navmaps.eu/wanmil/ and added --bounds=europe to my mkgmap call to get rid of an error regarding bounds. I can now transfer a searchable map to my gps unit from my mac again :) Does that sound about right? Thanks, Cliff

Hi Cliff, sounds good. Have you checked if the addresses are correctly assigned? You are using your own style-files or the default style-files? If you use your own, you have to add something like this to your lines, points and polygon-files: http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/pipermail/mkgmap-dev/2011q1/010656.html The values depend on the admin-levels to your country: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Admin_level#admin_level If you have found working values for your country, please send them to the list, to advance the default-style-file with this rules. Hi Martin, Unfortunately, all I seem to be able to do is use the --location-autofill=nearest option. So I don't seem to be able to take advantage of the new improvements. I did create preprocessed .bnd files using the --createboundsfile option on my 6*obm.pbf files, but then using --location-autofill (defaulting to the latterly created bounds directory) does not produce a searchable map on Basecamp or GPS. Perhaps this is explained by the admin boundary status at http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Admin_level#admin_level Thanks, Cliff On 27 Jul 2011, at 12:29, Clifford Nolan wrote:

Martin, Sorry, just to clarify, --location-autofill does produce a searchable map alright it's just that it is not very useful - streets can only be found by using search all cities option and when one looks up cities, all sorts of (nonsensical) things have been assigned cities. This seems to indicate that admin levels in Ireland are not useful for the autofilling improvements at the moment. Cliff On 27 Jul 2011, at 13:38, Clifford Nolan wrote:

Clifford, I have checked the boundary status of Ireland. It's completely covered with admin_level 2,5 and 6. admin_level 7 is used only for one big region around Dublin. The other admin_levels are used sporadically only. So you seem to be right, that the irish admin_level data in OSM is not sufficient for address mapping. Do you know if the city areas are mapped with other tags in Ireland? It might be possible to integrate that into the preprocessed bounds files. So long if you create a map for Ireland only it seems to be the best case to use --location-autofill=nearest,is_in WanMil

Hi Wanmil, Thanks for checking that out. I have had more time to check into it and I can see that streets in places like "Leixlip" (which has an admin_level=10 boundary relation) searches properly on both Basecamp and on the gps unit itself. Regards, Cliff

Hi, Countries like Ireland have a lot of small cities, villages, etc, for which an admin_level boundary is inappropriate. Instead, they may have a place=village boundary or something else like that. If I understand correctly, when --location-autofill=bounds is used, then only admin_level boundaries will be picked up when trying to assign a city for example. If --location-autofill=bounds,nearest is used then it will use the nearest rule when an object is not inside an appropriate admin_level boundary. That all sounds fine, except for when the nearest "city" node is inappropriate. To make the locator part of mkgmap more flexible, would it be possible to have the style file(s) dictate that a mkgmap:city tag is assigned to an object when it lies inside a place=village boundary (for example), as long as it is not also (superseded) by being in an admin_level=8 boundary? For your convenience, here is a list of our admin_boundaries http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Ireland/Boundaries#Boundary_Types Thanks, Cliff

Do you mean The sense of place used by the people is about culturally-defined boundaries which do not have government significance? If so, that would lead to three different naming hierarchies govt/admin postal cultural That may be how it is - this is really meant to be a question.
