mkgmap style: resolutuion and level vs. GARMIN device: zoom and map-detail settings

Hi all, I wonder how these things are connected: On one hand we have the style settings in mkgamp. resolution and level. On the other hand we have the GARMIN device. Here we may use the + and - buttons to set the zoom level, and on the Nüvi in Settings - map - "map detail" , on the Oregon in Settings - map - "advanced map setup" - detail, we have the detail level. On the Nüvi 40 there are only 3 detail levels (less - normal - more), while the Oregon has 5 detail levels (least - less - normal - more - most). Does anyone know these settings are connected ? I suspect that the GARMIN device calculates some value based on the zoom and detail level, and then searches the gmapsupp.img for objects with a matching resolution setting. But this is merely a guess. Ciao, Franco

Nobody got any idea on how these settings work together? Would be really helpful for style development. -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/mkgmap-style-resolutuion-and-level-vs-GARMIN-... Sent from the Mkgmap Development mailing list archive at Nabble.com.

Hi Franco, I have ideas, but not much I'd call knowledge: 1) The resolution given in the style determines how detailed lines or polygons are saved (e.g. the DouglasPeuckerFilter removes more details for lower resolution, other filters may remove too small objects) 2) The levels give the "internal" structure of the map. One or more resolutions are combined in one level, a map has up to 8 levels. I have no knowlledge how the device decides which resolution it has to read from the img file when a specific zoom is needed. I guess this may depend on the device. I guess that MapSource / Basecamp show the same amount of details as a device with the "normal" map-detail setting. Higher values probably mean that MapSource reads the details from higher resolutions as well. Gerd

Hi Gerd, thanks for the hint. When I find some spare time I might build some test maps, maybe I can find out a little more details. read "map toolkit" documentation. Level/resolution is well described, no need for experiments. (levels don't matter except making zooming steps smaller, resolution is all that matters - and of course the corresponding detail setting in GPS/Basecamp/Mapsource/Qlandkarte_GT. Mind though Qlandkarte_GT has it's own way of interpreting resolutions - unlike all other apps/gps devices... On 25.04.2013 22:01, franco_bez wrote:

Hi Felix, do you happen to have a link to the "map toolkit" documentation ? The only documents I can find in the internet are http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/MapTk/MapTk_en.pdf http://www.maptk.dnsalias.com/MapTk/MapTk_de.pdf There is some talk about levels, but not a single word about resolutions. ups sorry, I mixed it up. Look into Gpsmapedit documentation, and also map properties when you open an image. On 27.04.2013 13:49, Franco Bez wrote:
