Garmin Device Routing Options

Hi, In the Garmin GPSR (mine is a Etrex Legend HCX) there are several options for routing. How are they mapped to mkgmap/OSM features? Here my guesses: Calculate Routes for: Car -> motorcar Truck -> hgv (?) Bus -> psv (?) Emergency (???) Taxi -> taxi Delivery -> psv (?) Pedestrian -> foot Bicycle -> bicycle Avoid: Toll Roads -> toll=yes Highways -> (road classes 3&4 ??) Unpaved Roads -> (??) Carpool Lanes -> (??) Chris

Hi Chris,
In the Garmin GPSR (mine is a Etrex Legend HCX) there are several options for routing. How are they mapped to mkgmap/OSM features?
Here my guesses:
Calculate Routes for:
Car -> motorcar
or motorcycle
Truck -> hgv (?)
yes
Bus -> psv (?)
yes
Emergency (???)
emergency
Taxi -> taxi
yes
Delivery -> psv (?)
yes
Pedestrian -> foot
yes
Bicycle -> bicycle
yes
Avoid:
Toll Roads -> toll=yes
not sure if this works
Highways -> (road classes 3&4 ??)
has some effect
Unpaved Roads -> (??) Carpool Lanes -> (??)
these don't work Cheers, Mark

I tried yesterday and i was under the impression that unpaved worked. Or better - i turned off "Avoid unpaved" in my GPSMap 60Csx and i was immediatly send through a "surface=gravel" "highway=unclassified" which i have never sent through before. After doing some tests on my Etrex Legend HCX I believe that something is mixed up. On my device delivery/Lieferwagen(garmin) is mapped to emergency(osm). Bug on Garmin or bug in mkgmap ? Chris

You're right, the emergency and delivery access bits are swapped. Here's what I said in commit 965: Assign new values for bits that block emergency and delivery access. I am pretty sure that these two access bits go into the top two bits of the net pointer - I am not so sure that I have them the right way around - we need to check with an example map that has one of them set and the other clear to confirm the ordering. Guess I forgot to check if they were the right way around! Cheers, Mark

On my device delivery/Lieferwagen(garmin) is mapped to emergency(osm).
And vice versa. Emergency(garmin) is mapped to delivery/goods(osm). Dont't know if this is special to the Etrex or if all Garmin GPSR behave so. Also truck(garmin) is not only mapped to hgv but also to delivery and goods. Chris

Thanks for the fast patching. So it should be correct in V1136. I have written the mapping to this wiki page: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mkgmap/help/routing_options Chris

Delivery vs Truck Shouldn't there be a subtle difference between Delivery and Truck? As I understand it, Truck should allow routing THROUGH an area, whereas Delivery should also allow routing INTO an area. Each allowing or denying routing conforming to the UK motoring restriction 'HGV - Access only'. I can think of many instances where hgvs are only allowed into a road network if they are delivering or gaining access to a property, but not if they're driving through. Mario

The Garmin access restrictions as we understand them are not as flexible as the OSM tags. No through routing only works for cars, i.e. you can have motorcar=destination but the more general case access=destination or other specific cases like hgv=destination don't work. Cheers, Mark

Do I understand correct that the garmin maps have a flag for motorcar=destination which is different from motorcar= no ? I my style I have a rule highway=* & (access=private | access=destination | motorcar=destination) {add motorcar = no} This works but maybe is not necessary ? Chris

Hi Chris,

Yes, motorcar=no bars car traffic from a way but motorcar=destination only bars car traffic if the destination is not that way (or a connected way that also has destination only routing, (I think that's how it works!)) Cheers, Mark
