Hi I'm in the UK. On my Oregon 300 when I query a item with the red pin It display a few idiosyncrasies: Bridlepath are displayed as 'Fussweg' An area of landuse=residential as 'Ort' These appear to be language confusions but I can't see an specific option to specify a language & the country options should default to UK & GBR. Also barrier=fence/wall etc are displaying as 'lines' & landuse=grass as 'area' Is there a way to give them their specific titles? I'm Using v1560 but had the same problem with 1505. java -Xmx512M -ea -jar mkgmap.jar --remove-short-arcs --description="Bath & Surrounds" --gmapsupp "Contours.img" --generate-sea:polygons --transparent --style-file="c:\dwgs\Programs\GPS All\Garmin Profile" --family-id=42 M000002.TYP 63272002.gz The input file is from teddynetz http://openstreetmap.teddynetz.de:81/latest/osm/63272/ Another problem - In Setup>Map>Map Information Select Map. I'm trying to get a meaningful name to display for each map. I've used --description. Is this the correct option? It displays 'Uploaded with Sendmap' I'm using Sendmap to upload & it appears it's overriding the --description option or am I using the wrong one? Cheers Dave F.

You can define the name of each element in your TYP file.

Can you? I thought the Typ file was just for adding different colour lines & areas etc. Aren't the entities labels taken from the OSM data tags? Cheers Dave F.

As long as "name" exists in OSM. If not it is taken from typfile or some standard definition. So for a bridleway, it will mostly be taken from the typfile, as very few bridleways have actual names.

Hi folks, I got quite excited when generate-sea was introduced, and tried several combinations of parameters in the last weeks to render some Aussie sea - to no avail. There is just no sea polygon generated. - Did someone manage to generate some sea for (parts of) Australia and is so kind to share his parameters? - Is the data probably not sufficient, and I am contributing to global warming by rendering again and again? Cheers, Ben

Thanks for your replies. I now understand, but I'm a little disappointed. I was under the impression that a line or polygon in the TYP file could be used to represent multiple entities in the OSM data, but as the 'type of entity' name comes from that file, I have to create separate lines/polygons for each different one. A bit labourious. Cheers Dave F.

I don't think so ;-)

The name from the typ-file is only used, if the OSM does not have a name on is own. So for example in your typ-file the line 0x01 is called "primary" If you have a way in your OSM-data, wich is converted to a line 0x01 and which has a tag name=Examplestreet, than the resulting element in the garmin map will have the name "Examplestreet". If you have another way in your OSM-data, wich is converted to a line 0x01 and which does not have a tag name=*, than the resulting element in the garmin map will have the name "primary". I understood all of that previously. I'm using the online TYP editor: http://ati.land.cz/gps/typdecomp/editor.cgi The point I was trying, not very clearly, was if I have a line defined in the TYP file say 0x2c as a thin grey line, I thought I could use that multiples times in my 'lines' style file say for barrier=fence & also waterway=weir. However, because that definition in the TYP file includes a string 'english (0x04): Fence' when I query a weir (that doesn't have a name=* tag) on the Garmin screen, it tells me it's a Fence. So therefore I have to define an extra line in the TYP, with exactly the same attributes except for the string which I'd change to 'english (0x04): Weir'. I have another couple of related query: That 0x2c line above was one I added to the TYP file. The header is; Line #24) Type *0x2c* [*?*] 1. Is there way to substitute the [?] for a label ie Fence? I've removed the string 'english (0x04): Fence' from this line so now when I query a fence or weir it lists them as 'Line' which Is assume is the basic default(?) In another case I have a line in the TYP with a header of Line #4) Type *0x06* [*Road-thin (resident street)*] with no string value. I've assigned it to highway=unclassified in my 'lines' style. When I query an unclassified road, that doesn't have name, on the Garmin it lists it as 'Road' 2. Am I correct in assuming it got that lavel from the header? Is there a help/tutorial for the TYP editor? I hope I'm being clear. Cheers Dave F.

I don't know about your editor. If you edit your style manually, then you can change the name of each object within the action part of your rule: barrier=fence & name!=* {set name=fence} [0x2c resolution 20] waterway=weir & name!=* {set name=weir} [0x2c resolution 20] Gruss Torsten

barrier=fence & name!=* {set name=fence} [0x2c resolution 20] waterway=weir & name!=* {set name=weir} [0x2c resolution 20]
Why not using the default_name feature in the style file? barrier=fence [0x2c resolution 20 default_name 'fence'] waterway=weir [0x2c resolution 20 default_name 'weir'] should do exactly what the OP wanted. ****---*------*------*------*------*------*------*------*------*------* *\Viele -- Volker Bosch, Humboldtstr.21, 70771 Leinf.-Echterdingen **\ Gruesse -- Tel:(0711)713967, E-Mail: volker.bosch@t-online.de ***\ -- http://www.s-line.de/homepages/bosch

Doesn't this increase the size of the map unnecessarily? If you put the name once in the TYP file you don't have to store it for every single object. And in the TYP you can have several names for different langauge settings. AFAIK this is not possible in mkgmap.

And in the TYP you can have several names for different langauge settings. AFAIK this is not possible in mkgmap. As you can see I'm trying to use one linetype to represent different named objects. From what I've learnt it appears the way to do it is mentioned above.
