wrong elevationprofiles

Hi there, I've finished my holidayand brought you a problem with the elevationprofil. What I did: Generate elevationlines, merged them to osm-data generated a map (in end 12/2012) with style-rules and set-profile=1. The shown elevation-lines were almost correct, but the estimated altimeters generated by my Oregon 300 out of the profile were very bad and doesn't fit to reality and the elevation-lines. As example I've chosen the incline of Arthurs Pass in New Zealand ( http://www.openstreetmap.org/?lat=-42.8397&lon=171.6113&zoom=12&layers=Q ). This is the generated profile: http://www.aighes.de/data/71.bmp This is the route: http://www.aighes.de/data/133.bmp This is the recorded profile (which fits with reality and elevation-lines): http://www.aighes.de/data/profile.png Does anybody discovered similar effects? I'm pretty new to using set-profile=1, so maybe this isn't a bug in mkgmap and I made just an error. Henning, who is very surprised about the things happend to mkgmap during my holiday...great!!!

Hi Henning, The elevation plot of your Oregon is not derived from the mkgmap garmin map, but from the world DEM basemap. The altitudes are very rough unless you have bought a Topographic map. As far as I know mkgmap can't make a DEM map yet, which is needed to make such profiles on the gps unit.

Talking about DEM elevations, the hiking map of http://openmaps.eu is a free DEM map made with cgpsmapper, so maybe the DEM code is known outside Garmin?

I was intrigued enough to test this map. It certainly contains DEM data as a test route of two points across a deep valley showed a lovely profile on my device. But looking at the cgpsmapper manual DEM data cannot be created from it, only DEM-like maps (see link below) which should be able to show shaded relief but I can't see them showing route profiles. http://www.cgpsmapper.com/download/Creating%20custom%20types%20to%20represen... So how was the DEM created?! Put it this way I am removing this map from my system; and will not be re-installing until I can be sure of it's legality. yup, garmin maps made with a DEM, are created either using a pirated Garmin Map Compiler (MPC), or by directly pirating a DEM from a Garmin map. Several "open" maps float around in the web, doing this. It's definitely no way to go for mkgmap and OSM..... Profile for routes works, shading no. (exception being using polygons for shading , but that is crudgy). On 01.04.2013 16:52, Geoff Sherlock wrote:

Hi Minko Talking about DEM elevations, the hiking map of http://openmaps.eu is a free DEM map made with cgpsmapper, so maybe the DEM code is known outside Garmin? _______________________________________________ have checked one of the imgs containing DEM from the site you quoted - although cgpsmapper was perhaps used to create the imgs in the tdb file he mentions the 'legitimate' use of Garmins' MPC - see http://developer.garmin.com/web-device/mapsource-product-creator I have a feeling that although Stan has tried to decode the DEM structure, his cgpsmapper is still not offering DEM. Would be great if it did ! The set-profile=1 only works if contour lines are included - in fact I've noticed mkgmap automatically sets it to '0' in the tdbfile if no contours are found. ..Nick -- View this message in context: http://gis.19327.n5.nabble.com/wrong-elevationprofiles-tp5755383p5755408.htm...
