Baltic map looking good

I'm really pleased how well the Baltic marine map has come along (sample pics attached). Almost makes the hours spent working on the extended type attributes worthwhile. Just need those marine people to enter into the OSM database the remainder of the 10,000 marine map objects that the area probably contains. Mark

MB>I'm really pleased how well the Baltic marine map has come along It does look good. WELL DONE. Would you share your TYP file & style with us. Or is it proprietary. No objection if it is. You did all the work. All the same I like the look and want to try it on my map. Further: I have not tried the patch yet - I'm slow on patches, not enough skills (look I try once in a while, but by the time I get it right, the change is already commited) - but it seems from your comments that I'll have to apply some style and TYP magic, and I'm a bit scared to go there. BTW I like your style of developing the help info and discussing it before commitment. IMHO opensource is more about proper documentation than rapid development. _But we all love the rapids_, I just wish to salute your discipline to not forget the documentation. MB>Almost makes the hours spent working on the MB>extended type attributes worthwhile. _All_ the developers' hours spend on MkGMap _is_ worthwile, thanks and please carry on. A very mappy New Year to all of MkGMap. BennieD PS. Mark, when exactly do you sleep? Hi Bennie, Thanks for the kind words. I attach the TYP file I am currently using. It's very simple, I think most people use more complicated files than that. I also attach the style files. They are fairly similar to the default files with a few tweaked values here and there. The seamark related stuff is experimental but will get submitted for inclusion in the default style when it settles down. Cheers, Mark

Mark Mark,
I see you've got lots of placeholder polygons in your TYP file. Do you know what these are / what they do / why one might want to use them? -- Charlie

Hi Charlie,

If you use a TYP file, then you require either a polygon definition or a placeholder for every type of polygon that you want in the map. That's because those definitions specify the drawing level of the polygon. If you leave out the definition/placeholder for a given type of polygon, it will become invisible. Cheers, Mark

Charlie,
So why have a placeholder when you could just put in a polygon definition?
Good question - the placeholder simply gives the polygon's draw priority, the style for that polygon will be whatever default the GPS/mapsource uses. When you provide a full definition, you specify the visual style as well. Cheers, Mark
