I am trying to create a nightmode styling for my osm-ph gps maps. A good inspiration are radarmaps: http://justin.everett-church.com/ymaps/radarMaps.html Please share some tips in creating this style. Another thing, this maybe far fetched, but is there any desktop img viewer that can load the night mode style other than viewing it in the GPS itself? Here is my current day-mode style: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/2009/09/12/new-osm-ph-garmin-map-release-sept-... -- cheers, maning ------------------------------------------------------ "Freedom is still the most radical idea of all" -N.Branden wiki: http://esambale.wikispaces.com/ blog: http://epsg4253.wordpress.com/ ------------------------------------------------------

nRoute (which I is available on the Garmin website, but requires a seach around the net for a link to it) will switch between night and day styles according to the time of the day (adjust the PC clock as needed). Just install it along side mapsource. As to creating the style I'd have thought this is more down to creating the right TYP file rather than adjusting the mkgmap style.

QTLandkarteGT supports TYP files
Although QTLandkarteGT supports TYP files, I could not see any option to display the map in night mode (using the specially defined TYP styles for display at night). This would perhaps be an interesting request for the QTLandkarteGT developers, as, as far as I know, no other software does this. To my knowledge the only way to check out night styles on the desktop would be to create your own special TYP file with the night styles defined as normal daylight styles. You would also have to define a background polygon which is black, as the GPSr automatically changes the background to black in night mode. You could then swap the normal and night TYP files in the directory where your map is installed. Cheers.

Just out of interest, would it not be better to use primarily red colours in a night mode style? (As opposed to the greens in the radarmaps example.) For example, some astronomy programs (I'm thinking of Stellarium specifically), have a night mode which displays everything in muted red, as this apparently does not affect the night sensitivity of eyes as much as other colours of light. I do not know how much of a practical difference this makes though. In a similar vein, I found that when developing night styles, that it was best to use as few solid colours for areas as possible, and as few bright colours as possible in order to limit the amount of light projected from the GPS unit. With too much light, in otherwise very dark surroundings, it would take a few seconds for my eyes to readjust after looking at the GPS unit. Cheers.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll try my luck on them. On Sun, Sep 13, 2009 at 5:27 PM, Clinton Gladstone <clinton.gladstone@googlemail.com> wrote:

Testing your suggestion using cloudmade's style editor. http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3522/3915572190_984638cd9e.jpg Suggestions are welcome.
