[POI Categories Mismatch]

Hi, Once again I need your help... I get some categorie mismatches between an OSM map and the result in Garmin. For example, I define a point as a tourist office in JOSM and it appears as public toilets in the Garmin map. The tourist office doesn't appear in the POI Menu of the Garmin, only on the map. I've read on http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/ about correspondance trouble with the POI IDs : - From the mkgmap source file resources/styles/default/points : amenity=toilets & tourism=information [0x2f0c resolution 20] tourism=information [0x2f0c resolution 20] - On http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/POI_Types : I didn't find anything about a tourist office... Is there a way to resolve it? My second question is "Is it still impossible to display the sea?" I'm living on an island, and I just can't see the blue coast line anymore !! ;o) Thx Steph.

Hi Stéphane,
I get some categorie mismatches between an OSM map and the result in Garmin. For example, I define a point as a tourist office in JOSM and it appears as public toilets in the Garmin map. The tourist office doesn't appear in the POI Menu of the Garmin, only on the map.
I've read on http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/ about correspondance trouble with the POI IDs :
- From the mkgmap source file resources/styles/default/points : amenity=toilets & tourism=information [0x2f0c resolution 20] tourism=information [0x2f0c resolution 20]
- On http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/OSM_Map_On_Garmin/POI_Types : I didn't find anything about a tourist office...
On the POI types page, 0x2f0c (search for 0x0c in the section 0x2f (Auto services)) is documented to be listed in the following menus: Auto Services - All Categories Auto Services - Rest Area/Tourist Info When I filled in the Edge 605/705 column on Monday, I also wrote down that the icon represents a man and woman (as in toilets). When I select the French menu language in my Edge 705, the Where To? - Find Places menu is called Où aller ? - Rechercher lieux, and 0x2f0c appears in the submenu Centers Auto - Aire de repos/information. I will document the discrepancy at http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/, noting that all tourism informations are displayed with a toilet symbol. I will also document that embassies will be listed under city halls. I welcome any other suggestions. For now, I plan to only document the oddities in the POI mapping, not things that make sense (such as restaurants). Best regards, Marko

Thanks Marko. But There is no way to resolve this trouble? I don't know... Maybe change manually the POI type on the OSM side in order to match the Garmin Poi's type. Does it seem possible?

Hi again Stéphane,
But There is no way to resolve this trouble? I don't know... Maybe change manually the POI type on the OSM side in order to match the Garmin Poi's type. Does it seem possible?
As far as I understand, the Garmin POI menu structure is predetermined by Garmin. The text labels and the icons can be overridden with a TYP file. Long term, I think that we should include TYP files in the styles, but someone would have to implement that. It is just a matter of coming up with a nice textual format and programming a converter in Java. All relevant information and some tools are already out there. What do you want to achieve? There already are separate POI codes for toilets (0x4e00) and tourism information (0x2f0c). The problem as far as I see it is that the icon for 0x2f0c is misleading. I would rather include all tourism=information on the map, instead of insisting on a correct default icon and only using 0x2f0c for amenity=toilets & tourism=information. I do not know how you are using the map, but I tend to access the POIs via the Where To? - Find Places menu. Most POI icons only seem to be visible at 50m or closer zoom level, so they cannot be easily seen when browsing the map on the tiny screen. Therefore I do not care much about the appearance of the icons. For example, if I see a white square icon, I move the pointer over it to see the POI details. Best regards, Marko

Hi, I am living on a little island, and I just can't see the blue coast line anymore !! Is there a way to display the sea?? Thx Steph.

Which release of mkgmap are you using? Do you use a custom style file? And which little island are you living on? ;-) Cheers.

Is there a way to change the OSM map label during the GPS boot? (Replace the awfull upercase Banner "OPENSTREETMAP.ORG CONTRIBUTORS") Thx Steph.

I have now documented this oddity (as well as amenity=embassy being listed under Community/City Hall) on http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/ in Finnish, German and English. (Translations into other languages are welcome, and I do not mind if someone copies the content to the OSM wiki.)
My second question is "Is it still impossible to display the sea?" I'm living on an island, and I just can't see the blue coast line anymore !!
By default it is. There is the --generate-sea-polygons option, but according to some reports it could require hours of processing time. I lost the patience already at 30 or so minutes. :-) Besides, I would be very surprised if it really worked on Finland. Here, even complex lakes, such as Saimaa, are displayed as outlines. I see a light blue line for the shore and the normal land background colour for the water. Best regards, Marko

Hi Marko, Thanks for your reply... I'm gona test and I tell you the result -- Stephane Marko Mäkelä a écrit :
