How do I get a blue sea?
I'm using mkgmap to install OSM on my Garmin GPS. Lakes and rivers come out in blue on both Mapsource and the GPS, but the sea comes out white. The shoreline appears as a single thin line. I am using pbf files of England, Scotland and Wales downloaded from geofabrik Download-Bereich. I have the option '--generate-sea=polygons,extend-sea-sectors,close-gaps=1000' in the mkgmap command line. The 'polygons' file contains 'natural=sea [0x32 resolution 18]'. Any suggestions as to how I might get a blue sea? Many thanks! I use generate-sea: extend-sea-sectors,close-gaps=6000,floodblocker,land-tag=natural=background In the polygon style, I'm specifying a land-tag "natural=background" and not "natural=land" because the last one is often used to make islands in a lake. The background must get the second lowest draw order (sea is the lowest) so if you use natural=land as background those islands in a lake are rendered under the lake. BTW I have noticed in the default style there isn't a tag for natural=land or a another background. If you don't specify a background, this will cause 'ghosting' problems in Mapsource. When you zoomed in or out, it disappears. This effect only shows up in the later versions of Mapsource (6.16.x). You don't see it in Basecamp.

Yes, both 0x32 and 0x28 are included, with the entry in the MapTK prj file for 0x32 as [Polygon] Type=0x32 DrawOrder=3 String=4,Sea Color=0,0x0000ff [END]

Thanks to a number of helpful suggestions, I now have a blue sea. The final change which worked was to get the options in mkgmap in the right order - so that '--generate-sea' came before the file names. However, mkgmap now generates a series of errors on one source file (out of 33). An example is SEVERE (MapSplitter): 60923011.osm.gz: Area too small to split at http://www.openstreetmap.org/?mlat=52.01198&mlon=0.94047&zoom=17 (reduce the density of points, length of lines, etc.) A total of 10 of these appeared, all from the same input file (generated from a Great Britain download using splitter) and all in the same region. I have looked at two of them with Potlatch and Mapsource, and can see no anomalies. One is in blank space, the other in woodland. They did not appear (using the same data files) before I made changes to get the sea. I have re-downloaded the data files and run splitter/mkgmap again with the same results. Any suggestions as to where these come from and how to get rid of them?
