Address search index questions.

Hello there, i have just started to use mkgmap a few days ago and managed to do everything i wanted without issues. However, i have a question that i can not find already answered anywhere: The fact that address search only works (on a garmin device) when the search string starts with the exact same characters of the matches is a limitation on the Garmin OS, on mkgmap, or am i doing something wrong ? For example, if the street name is “Manuel Belgrano”, and i search for “belgrano”, i will never get a match, however, if i search for “manuel”, i will get a match. Same happens for cities. Any help on this would be appreciated. Thanks. // Diego

Hi Diego, I think --x-split-name-index is the option you are looking for. ciao, Gerd ________________________________________ Von: mkgmap-dev-bounces@lists.mkgmap.org.uk <mkgmap-dev-bounces@lists.mkgmap.org.uk> im Auftrag von Diego Massanti <diego@massanti.com> Gesendet: Mittwoch, 30. Thanks so much, will try now! Also, i did a lot of improvements to the styles specifically for Argentina and Chile, i might do a pull request/commit if there is any interest to include them on the styles. Not sure if you guys are interested in country specific style improvements. Just let me know! // Diego

In fact it is not documented, it kind of works for street names, but not for cities. I haven't looked at the code, but i think that it separates the street names into words, and then adds all the words to the index. It would be great if we could implement this also for city names! // Diego

Well i live in Argentina, and our main capital is named “Ciudad Autonoma de Buenos Aires”, however some people will just refer to it as “Buenos Aires”. Im sure i can find some other examples specially in spanish, but so far i faced the problem when typing “Buenos Aires” and getting back zero results just because the “official” name is the other one. // Diego

I attempt to handle this kind of thing in the styles, for addresses in the Netherlands where the most significant part is usually the last word of the street name and the first few words may be "filler" information - often personal names/titles etc of famous people. Using the following rules I find the last word of the name and add it as an additional label if it "qualifies". # CS: capture last part of name for dutch names in street index - limit to known suffixes to reduce crud highway=* & mkgmap:country=NLD & name=* {set cs:lastpart='${name|part: :-1}'; } cs:lastpart=* & !(cs:lastpart ~ '.*(weg|straat|laan|plantsoen|dijk|singel|vaart|wetering|kamp|slag|dreef|steeg|hof|dal|pad|plein)') { delete cs:lastpart; } # CS: get alternative name in the index cs:lastpart=* & name!=$cs:lastpart {addlabel '${cs:lastpart}';} It might not be so easy to parse other languages - what in Dutch would be Karl Marxstraat, in German you might write Karl-Marx-Strasse, which would need extraction of the last two parts. I think also the use of a stop-word list has been discussed before, but it gets complicated because the stop-words are language-dependent (and not simply country-dependent). --colin On 2015-12-31 10:21, Gerd Petermann wrote:

Hi Thomas, options.txt contains: --x-split-name-index A temporary option to enable indexing each part of a street name separately. So for example if the street is "Aleksandra Gryglewskiego" then you will be able to search for it as both "Aleksandra" and "Gryglewskiego". It will also increase the size of the index. Useful in countries where searching for the first word in name is not the right thing to do. Note that this option is still experimental and there may be problems. If you find any let us know! I guess you did not find it because of a typo (--x-splitt-name-index has two 't' ) Gerd ________________________________________ Von: mkgmap-dev-bounces@lists.mkgmap.org.uk <mkgmap-dev-bounces@lists.mkgmap.org.uk> im Auftrag von Thomas Morgenstern <webmaster@img2ms.de> Gesendet: Donnerstag, 31. Hmm, no idea why you have that problem. You can use java -jar mkgmap.jar -help=options > options.txt Line 129 should contain the option. If that is not the case you probably don't use r3656. The option is indeed returned by "java -jar mkgmap.jar --help=options" I use mkgmap inside an Ant wrapper script : args are passed inside a file. If I add —x-split-name-index inside in this args file, mkgmap crashes with an exception. If I add the option as a command line arg (hardcoded in the Ant script), then mkgmap runs OK. Is this intended ? Cheers, Paco

options.txt contains: --x-split-name-index A temporary option to enable indexing each part of a street name separately.
I guess you did not find it because of a typo (--x-splitt-name-index has two 't' )

Hhm, Gerd, please discard what I wrote below, I forgot to remove the 2 dashes in the option name when I added it to the option file. It is accepted in the option file. Sorry for the noise. Paco.

The option is indeed returned by "java -jar mkgmap.jar --help=options"
I use mkgmap inside an Ant wrapper script : args are passed inside a file. If I add —x-split-name-index inside in this args file, mkgmap crashes with an exception. If I add the option as a command line arg (hardcoded in the Ant script), then mkgmap runs OK. Is this intended ?
Cheers, Paco

Hmm, no idea why you have that problem.
You can use java -jar mkgmap.jar -help=options > options.txt Line 129 should contain the option. If that is not the case you probably don't use r3656.

Hi Gerd,
I can’t find this option in the latest mkgmap version 3656, neither in the accepted options nor in the options.txt file. Is this still in a branch ?
Thanks, Paco

Hi, yes we can read the options using /java -jar mkgmap.jar -help=options > options.txt./ But it is a good idee, this actuall option.txt-version to includ in the download http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/download/mkgmap-r3656.zip. I this zip-file is only a old version without the new --x-split-name-index. regards thomas Am 31.12.2015 um 14:57 schrieb Gerd Petermann:

Hi Thomas, when mkgmap prints the options it uses the file that is in the jar. You are right, the options.txt file that is included in the zip seems to be out-aged. I guess this is a problem in the build scripts. I guess this is a problem in the build scripts.
It is the doc/options.txt file that is used for the distribution and for the website documentation at http://www.mkgmap.org.uk/doc/options There is a script (scripts/options_to_doc.py) that converts the unstructured resources/help/en/options file to mediawiki the format that is found in the 'doc' directory. The script isn't good enough to run automatically and so I have to fix it up by hand. This isn't very good. So I shall modify the mkdoc script to use the actual 'options' file for the distribution. I have already updated the doc/options.txt file for the website. I have made a few minor formatting changes to the options file too. I'll check all that in and it should build with an up to date options help from now on. It may take a couple of attempts... ..Steve
