First post to the mailing list - Garmin search issues

Hi I have been experimenting with mkgmap and struck and issue with the search features on my Garmins. My 62s using the spell search will find items such as lakes and huts (I am a bushwalker) but my Rino 650 can only find cities under the point of interests. I am using the same img files created as per below Windows 7 bat file. Any clues? Hi, do you have multiple maps of the same region in GPS? GPS can use other map for search then you expect. -- Best regards, Andrzej

Hi Andrzej The Garmin 62s and Rino 650 have multiple maps with the Rino 650 having only OSM generated ones (aside from the Garmin basemap). The 62s has Garmin's topo maps. The feature "Hut 3" only appears in OSM data, not Garmin's topo maps. Here is a link to the img file that I have created. https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=D994A45D28184300!429&authkey=!AI3juHlx... Are you or anyone else having trouble with the search feature? I am installing the maps on the Garmins by directly copying the img file. I must admit I am rather puzzled how Garmin works with multiple maps as the enable and disable does not appear to change the indexes at time. It appears almost that Garmin caches data. Cheers Brett

Hi Brett, my problem is that GPS uses OSM map for search, when I'd like to use commercial map covering the same area. I'm not able to find, what feature is responsible for index priority. My current solution is to remove search index from OSM map. I agree that support for multiple maps is weird on outdoor devices. In case of 62 you probably can select maps for search, at least at some search types. On my Dakota I have no options. -- Best regards, Andrzej

Hi On the weekend went bushwalking with the Garmin Rino 650 and 62S to experiment with the search features. I stripped all but a single OSM generated map from the Rino 650 and used Garmin Topo, Shonky, and OSM on the 62S. The Rino 650 search finds nothing under all POI but if I go down to say geographical features is can find POI such as mountains. The find all works with the 62S. As mentioned by another member of this mailing list, I am rather stymied on how to select what index to use. As always any hints and pointers would be appreciated. Cheers Brett
