Garmin "Feature" or bug?

I have a suspicion this is a Garmin "Feature" rather than a bug but thought it best to check. I have an Edge 605 which I'm using with routable maps created with mkgmap r806. If I go to the menu option to Find | Places then my 605 lists all places within a radius including those on the gmapsupp.img. There is also an option to enter a name manually but if I try this it only gives me place names from the gmapbmap.img. If I remove the gmapbmap.img and try again then the 605 crashes which is why I suspect it's a feature Can anyone shed any light on this Thanks Paul

I've never heard of a gmapbmap.img. My assumptions, but they may be totally wrong: From the name i would think, this is the basemap. I think, in the generated gmapsupp.img is some information for places missing, so the garmin unit tries to read this information from the basemap. If this informations are also missing then the unit will crash.

Yes the gmapbmap.img is the base map. Without the base map file I can't manually enter names at all. As soon as I try to enter the first letter the unit crashes and turns itself off (it searches each time you enter a letter so you don't have to type the full place name) I have noticed that with the base map if I start entering letters then it will show me places starting with those letters in other countries (quite possibly all europe) rather than just the UK. I updated to r849 today and this still persists but I don't know whether it's designed to only search the base map or not. Thanks Paul Johann Gail wrote:

On a Garmin etrex there are at least two "find" options - "Find by Name" and "Nearest Containing". The first of these searches the base map and the second the supplementary (OSM) map. I'm guessing that the user interface on the Edge has different options?

The option is Find Places | Cities. It then brings up a list of those "Near Current Location" with an option to "spell" your own. Other POIs wich can also be searched for such as Find Places | Food & Drink or Find Places | Gas Station all allow me to manually enter a name without a problem Thanks Paul Someoneelse wrote:

After selecting "Find" and "Cities" on an etrex I get a choice of "Find By Name", "Nearest Containing", "Select Map" and "Change Reference". "Select Map" allows the choice of OSM's map (called "map") or the built-in one (listed as "RecreationaRoutable Highw") or "Use Best Maps" (which seems to cause Find by Name to search one and Nearest Containing the other).
Other POIs wich can also be searched for such as Find Places | Food & Drink or Find Places | Gas Station all allow me to manually enter a name without a problem
The etrex doesn't have a "Find by Name" option against these, only "Nearest Containing", and it only searches the OSM map. I guess if the Edge doesn't have a way to select the map or search for "Nearest Containing" you're a bit stuck...

I suspect the etrex would search the OSM map with "Find by Name" also, provided the relevant data was being written, which I suspect it is not. Not that I know anything about the addressing information. Cheers Robert

that seems to be correct. The menu items in my eTrex Legend HCx depend on the map I use. With a map generated by mkgmap I get the described behaviour, i.e. I can only "Find nearest". The menu in <Find> <Cities> <Menu button> contains only three options. When I use a map from http://emexes.powweb.com/osm/download.html which was generated with cgpsmapper I can do: <Find> <Cities> The it shows the "Nearest" dialogue page. When I press the Menu button I get a menu with four entries instead of three: "Find by name", "Find nearest", "Select map" and "Change reference". If i choose "Find by name" it searches the OSM map and the basemap. If I enter "Hamburg" it shows me several Hamburgs in the US (from the basemap) and Hamburg in Germany from the OSM map.

On my Garmin etrex venture there are always all four options available, independent of the img-file I choose. With the original mapsource generated files all works as expected. With the maps generated with mkgmap I can select 'Find by name' but only the cities from the basemap are found. If I select 'Find nearest' then all cities are found, also the ones from the osm data. I also asume, that some information is missing. I strongly assume, that this information is contained in the MDR part of the img file. On http://libgarmin.wiki.sourceforge.net/Contribute you can find, that this part contains an search index.

Presumably thanks to the work of Mark Burton (see [mkgmap-dev] Find by name - experimental patch 28/01/09) then this is now working. I used r856 and can now search with or without the basemap Thanks Paul Paul wrote:
