Routing with the eTrex 30

Hi all, A couple of weeks ago some of you asked me about the routing capabilities of the new eTrex 30 model. First of all, as I said before. My previous model was a Venture HC, so without routing. I had nothing to compare to, when it comes to routing on an eTrex. Today I finally had time to do some tests. So I downloaded a fresh copy from garmin.openstreetmap.nl of The Netherlands with the Mapnik TYP file and put the gmapsupp.img on my gps. I made sure the routing was set to car and went of for a short trip of geocaching in the neighborhood on my bike. My conclusion is that car navigation does send me over cycleways and footways. It also sends you the wrong way in a oneway street. Some foot/cycleways I was send over: http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=123268791 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=38227297 http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=124617312 The street it send me the opposite way was http://www.openstreetmap.org/?way=111853421 When it did, it showed "Hofzicht (Cycleway)" in the display. That "Cycleway" was in English even with Dutch language settings in the gps. Regards, Frank

Thanks Frank, Thats what I already feared. "Hofzicht (Cycleway)" is a created line by mkgmap with the make-all-cycleways tag (cycleway=opposite) make-all-cycleways If you are using a style file this option is not necessary because it can be created in the line styles with continue statements and the second artificial cycleway can be made invisible. I don't know why (cycleway) is hard coded in mkgmap.

Funny, so Garmin seems to have new flags for the new models. Interresting question is: are old garmin maps (city navigator) still working on the new models? Chris

Yes, apparently something has changed for the new devices.

I always have used OSM based maps on my Garmin devices, so I haven't got a clue. I don't know anyone with City Navigator maps either, so for my it is hard to test. But from what I understand from Minko, this behavior also occurs in Basecamp (*), so maybe others can test this without the need to own a new device. On the other hand, Basecamp is probably aware of the difference and handles the maps accordingly. So IF the old maps work in Basecamp, it doesn't automatically mean they work in the new eTrex. I've tested an old CN on Basecamp and couldnt find any new issues compared to the Mapsource version. Cyclists are still routed to national routes that are forbidden to cycle on, but this is because Garmin doesn't care about bike riders. Of course cars are not routed on bikepaths because CN simply doesn't show them. So you can't compare this to OSM maps.

As I already wrote long time ago on the Basecamp forum, I don't think Garmin cares at all. Cause NO single map Garmin ever published does use bicycle or related settings. Hence not mkgmap does something wrong, but Garmin just eliminated sthg they never used. Probably in a few versions the mode of transport will be gone from the GUI too. That's my feeling, too. With the latest firmwares, my GPSmap62 avoids cycleways, even if in bicycle mode. Which leads to suggestions for a 10km route as "fastest", even if there is a direct cycleway 4km shorter and 15 minutes faster. In shortest mode it prefers the hiking track beside ... Thorsten, Is that map made with the default styles? I wonder how your route will be on my cyclemap Openfietsmap Germany, http://tinyurl.com/openfietsmap-de On my maps I gave the cycleways and bikeroutes the highest class (so don't use avoid highways) and I gave roads which have bicycle=no a non routable line. You can download it or send me a gpx file from this route so I can test it on a Dakota. Thorsten wrote: That's my feeling, too. No, with my own.

Nearly the same as I do, so I don't think that the result will be different. But I can test next week when I'm back. Thorsten
