Dear professionals, Mark has made a very nice nautical chart for www.OpenSeaMap.org <https://sourceforge.net/projects/openseamap/files/Maps/Garmin/baltic.zip/download> It works very well on handhelds! Next week we will exhibit OpenSeaMap on the boat show www.boat-duesseldorf.com (23.-31. January, hall 14/G39). Now I need your help: How can I make working the map on a Garmin nautical chart plotter? Garmin *GPSmap 525* with SD-slot. Sub-folder: "Garmin" File: "gmapsupp.img" Message: "Map format is not supported" and: "DK Copenhagen" Thanks for help! Markus

Thanks for help! Markus _______________________________________________ Playing around on the Garmin website (https://buy.garmin.com/shop/buym), it seems that only a very limited set of official Garmin maps are compatible with (or at least, available for) the GPSMap 525. All of them are marine maps.
It may be that marine maps have a slightly different format to the land-based maps. AFAIK, there are at least three Garmin map formats: old (pre NT), NT and NT2. I think mgkmap produces only old (pre NT) maps.

There are also three formats used by nautic maps. The old "blue chart"", the newer G2, and the newest being called G2 vision (including aerial photopgraphy). The G2 / G2 vision maps cannot be displayed by Mapsource - instead you have to use Garmin Homeport (which is not free). --GPSmap 525 it strikes me that this unit is not listed to be compatible with normal blue charts ( http://www8.garmin.com/cartography/mapSource/bluechartCD.jsp ). Also on the unit page of Garmin it seems the 525 is only made for G2 or G2 vision maps. So you might have to try out a nautic unit that is still listed being compatible with Garmin blue chart maps.

Hi Felix,
There are three formats used by nautic maps: - old "blue chart", - newer G2, - newest G2 vision (including aerial photopgraphy).
The G2 / G2 vision maps cannot be displayed by Mapsource instead you have to use Garmin Homeport (which is not free).
So the IMG is working on devices who can read "blue chart"? Homeport: It is made for to use Garmin charts on PC? Is it also usable for to use OSM charts on Garmin? Is there a opensource "derivate" of Homeport? Any other idea how to get OSM on marine plotters? Thanks for help! Markus

Thanks for help! Markus I don't think that mkgmap can write anything like the G2/G2 vision format. Therefore IMHO the gpsmap 525 is a bad GPS to try. First try an older nautic GPS that can still read "old" blue chart maps. Homeport is the PC program for nautic maps, like Mapsource is for streetmaps. (only that they ask 30$ for it).

Found something: (either change in mkgmap source, or with gmaptool on the gmapsupp.img): set "TRE 0-4-23" and it might work. This is the process to make "old" blue chart maps compatible with newer units that accept maps like City Navigator but not old blue chart (like gpsmap 620).

Err, sorry to be thick but where is this set?
You told it once to me I think, or at least how to write the values..... Here is the patch I'm using currently because of some problems with routing and too late off-route calculation. I'm forgot how you will achieve 0-4-23 the file below, but I'm sure you'll get it. Otherwise use gmaptool (click advanced, and experimental). It's about the tdb file. --- src/uk/me/parabola/imgfmt/app/trergn/TREHeader.java (revision 1413) +++ src/uk/me/parabola/imgfmt/app/trergn/TREHeader.java (working copy) @@ -172,7 +172,7 @@ writer.put(getPoiDisplayFlags()); writer.put3(displayPriority); - writer.putInt(0x110301); + writer.putInt(0x170401); writer.putChar((char) 1); writer.put((byte) 0);
