
Hi Mike I think this is just a problem with the rules the tool you are using to show the image conflicting with what --order-by-decreasing-area aims to achieve on a Garmin device. For instance, observations of GPSMapEdit shows it renders smaller polygons on top of larger ones as the way of deciding what is shown. --order-by-decreasing-area has split polygons geographical and so this size-based rule becomes meaningless and can result in what you are seeing. Hi Ticker, that stops the unbound recursion, however the map it produces is faulty. The only areas that show up as land are complete rectangles within the mainland (see attachment). Even small islets do not have any land area. Of course this may be a different problem.
