Steve, My problem turned out to be a silly one. I had done some clean up of my directory in the past and deleted the icenik.typ file the script was trying to use. Both splitter and mkgmap are now happy and processing data fine. I'll play about with the with different splitter alignments to see if I can regenerate your problem. P.S. What data set is causing you the problem on geofabrik?
