I would introduce a "mkgmap:streetname" or something similar. Then you can use one variable in your style to set the correct streetname, and the "name" to set what should be displayed, and adjust both in your style file. Thorsten
Could there be an additional way of doing this - that is not visible in output, by adding some special characters?
My problem is - in my style I add quite a lot of stuff to the name, and that is via multiple commands (route names, refs, difficulty, and so on). If I use brackets - that will end up with lots of brackets in some cases. Improve matching of street names for housenumber assignment
The housenumber handling uses the style sheet generated name of streets and matches that to the addr:street tag of housenumbers. The style sheet name is now stripped by the shield information (usually a ref) and text within brackets (also usually the ref name).
