This symptom is similar to that caused in certain units (eTrex) when a
SD card was used which had been previously written o on a Mac OS X
system. Mac OS copied hidden files to the SD card, which interfered
with the unit.

If your SD card has been used in a Mac OS machine, you may wish to
investigate this.
