Actually for pedestrian "highways", areas are allowed, in particular for pedestrian squares: http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway%3Dpedestrian This tagging is particularly common in the down town areas of European cities. I have long hoped for such a patch. :-) I will try it out. Cheers.
