Did you enable mkgmap logging with java -Dlog.config=logging.properties ... -jar mkgmap.jar ...? That should produce a lot of data. I use the file http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/files/logging.properties and filter out the junk from mkgmap.log.0 with a custom filter, available at http://www.polkupyoraily.net/osm/.
