Thanks Gerd! I have test it once and the patched mkgmap was 25% faster than r2147. I think common cases will not give such a big performance boost but the result is: it's faster (no matter how much) :-) Therefor I have commited the patch. How did you measure the reduced heap memory? I only know the method to reduce the -Xmx parameter until java throws an OutOfMemoryExeption. But that's a very tedious method. WanMil

attached is a small patch that improves mkgmap throughput. It uses the String.intern() method only in those places where tag info is read from input files. During my tests, this reduced(!) needed heap memory and made the program ~ 5-10% faster.
