Hi Gerd, No, that's a mistake on my part. It looks like abandoned:highway=* is for the old highway value (e.g. abandoned:highway=classified) and if the highway tag is also present, it's for the current highway value (e.g. abandoned:highway=path). Ways with abandoned:highway but without highway should be ignored. I've updated the patch. Let me know if I didn't express that correctly. Here's a patch to hide abandoned highways in the default style. Abandoned highways have some evidence of their former existence but are no longer used. I made a separate rule for this change to highlight that abandoned highways could be useful in topographical maps.

The rule also matches highway=abandoned. While not an official OSM rule, it is being used in the US an Europe:
